[E-Type] wiper switch 66 2+2

On my way in today I flipped on the wiper switch and
then …nothing. I flipped it to hi speed and the wipers came on.
Flip back and forth between low speed and high and then it decided
to work on low. The switch feels stiffer then when I used it two
days ago and the wipers were working perfectly. Is there a way to
disassemble these switches and maybe clean the contacts? I don’t
want to go to the trouble of removing it from the dash and finding
out that I would have to replace it. Anyone know? I have the Series
1 flip style. Hope it isn’t raining on my way home tonite!Excellant
advise from this Forum as always appreciated!

Hi,

If I remember correctly, there is a resistor in the switch
itself, which gives the current for the ‘‘slow’’ speed. No,
sorry, the wiring diagram seems to indicate that it is
inside the wiper motor, as there are five wires that go to
the wiper motor from the switch and one that comes from the
parking switch.

When I restored mine 12 years ago, it all worked fine at
first, but then, driving in rain, the slow speed stopped
working just like that. I also had to use the high speed,
but if I remember correctly I the rewired it so that both
positions would just run the slower speed, as I thought the
fast one was far too fast for my liking.

Fortunately the aerodynamics (maybe even more so in a SI 2+2
with the steeper windscreen) take care of most of the water,
so anything over 50mph in rain gets the windscreen clear of
water quite nicely and the slower speed takes care of the rest.

But if the wiper motor is unmounted and then opened I am
sure it can be fixed by replacing that resistor and/or
cleaning the contacts, maybe changing also the brushes etc.
I remember the linkage was a PITB to install, but the motor
should come loose without needing to uninstall the whole
wiper linkage.

Although this together with the clock is at the bottom of my
‘‘to do’’ list!

Ken,

The metal part of the switch body is crimped around the plastic
part. You might be able to pry it open and do the cleaning and
then put it back together again. Or you could first try some Radio
Shack contact cleaner - the kind we used to use on TV set tuners,
with a little lubricant in the mix.–

Pekka, there is no resistor in the wiper motor. It has a centre
tapped winding in the stator so that you can switch in the whole
winding or just half the winding to give you the 2 speeds. Half the
winding gives half the speed. I rewound my motor about a year ago
but didn’t take any notice of what colour wires went on the
windings so spent a lot of time figuring out what wire went to what
terminal on the switch. I now don’t have any wires going to the
switches terminals 4 or 5 from the motor but do have terminals 5
and 6 permanently shorted and it works a treat. The self parking
didn’t work either so put in a micro switch to fix that. As for
the switch, I haven’t opened it but from the diagrams I have for
its 3 positions it looks a nightmare if you pop it open a springs
and contacts go all over the place. I’d be rinsing it an ultra
sonic bath with some freon (Wiggy got some) before I considered
opening it.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info. I have never had the motor open, so I
didn’t know what caused the ‘‘half speed’’ functionality. I
also figured out the logic by connecting different wires and
with the help of a multimeter measuring the current and
resistance.

Anyway, the parking switch works (mostly) for me, but
sometimes it will do one more wipe after I have switched it
off, depending on where it is when I flick the switch.

I don’t think I’m willing to open the whole thing to solve
this, as my switch works flawlessly (all positions give the
desired voltage and current, and you’re right, the slow and
fast do give the same amounts but just to different wires)
but anyway that is a mystery then why my wiper motor stopped
working half speed with the right connection, but works half
speed if the fast speed feed is wired to the half speed on
the motor…hmmm…can of worms indeed, I don’t think I’m
going to open it unless it stops working completely!
