[E-Type] Wiring harness overbraid

Hi Listers,

My cosmetic upgrade under the bonnet has progressed. I’ve got the
wirng harness out of my '67 FHC and I can’t really tell what colors
are braided into the cloth wrapped around the harness. Does anybody
know what the color or colors are supposed to be there?

Thanks

Peter,

You need to get yourself a wiring schematic. It is essential for
i.d. and for figuring out what goes where. I wired my 74 OTS from
scratch after it caught on fire and I had to replace every harness
from the seats forward. I would have had a really tough time
doing it without the diagrams. Also, a digital meter will confirm
what wire goes where by performing continuity checks on all
connections. It is time consuming but absoluletly essential.
Just take your time. Good luck.

Pete,

My new wiring harness has a blue color woven in at intervals. I
don’t know if that’s the original color, and the remaining section
of the original harness is kind of beyond recognition…

I can send a photo offline if you like. I think that Rhode Island
Wiring can re-wrap your old harness, and fix the ends up etc. Just
fyi.–

I think I can answer that for you based on the harnesses I bought for my
car. The 3.8 harness has a blue thread in it, while the green thread is for
the 4.2. We learned that by trial and error, by the way – the first one
matched perfe3ctly, blue tracer; second, green tracer, had some strange
wires. Traded it for the blue harness and everything matched.

Thanks guys,

I should clarify a little. I asked the nice people at Rhode Island
Wiring to re-overbraid my front harness. Their expert opinion was
to replace the harness due to cracked insulation, missing
insulators and poor alternator wires. They turned out a really
nice product (yet to be installed) in short order. I was confused
by the presence of light blue and dark green tracers in the
overbraid of the new harness. The colors in my old harness are so
faded I can’t tell what they are. I think the info I had was for a
3.8 so now I’m pretty sure the RIW people are right. I should not
have doubted them!

Thanks again,
