[E-Type] Wiring strapping of fixing to main frame

As mentioned in another post, I am about to finish assembling my
1.5 coupes bonnet and at the same time, I have been using the
ocassion to do some detailing in the engine compartment, trying to
comply as much as I can with the JCNA judging guide, March 2006,
where it calls for Black plastic strapping with holes for white
nylon push through studs for fixing the wiring to the chassis.

I have the material already (by the way, with my car I got two
different sized ones, being dimensionally the same but one having
much smaller nylon studs than the other and I don’t know which one
is closer to correct).

Main question is: how do I know where these straps must be located.

From pictures I have been able to see, some cars, in the left
chassis member use 3, but others use 5 straps… so, it is not
clear for me wether these were factory installed items in a regular
form, or if they were just placed wherever they would seem to be
needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
victor–

Oh… and I forgot to ask this:

In all of the pics I have been able to find, I see the black
perforated plastic material attached with the nylon studs pointing
up, or that is, on the upper side of the chassis member, but the
instructions I have in one of the kits mentions they should be
pointing down.

Can anybody shed some light here as to what is the correct way?

Thanks,

ok, that one I can answer… they point up on my car. They are
flat on the bottom so up is the only practical way they will
work. I have some pics of my Series 1 4.2 if you’re
interested. I took wire loom pics for just that reason.

I suspect that the smaller studs are the ones you want to
use. If I recall, one of the usuals supplied studs that had
a larger head on it, which isn’t correct.

I also suspect that the factory used a basic scheme as to
where to tie down the harnesses but not a very rigid one. My
original car and another original I saw in Dallas had the
strapping applied in somewhat different locations. So my
suggestion is to do your best and remember that the
strapping is to hold the harnesses.

Whether correct or not my car has 5 and has for the 33 years I’ve had
it. Difficult to describe location, I can send a pic if you like.

Victor,
I saved a photo from someone (sorry I don’t recall who it was)
that laid a ruler on the frame raile with straps in place to show
how many and where they are placed. There are 5 - I’ll send the
photo off list because posting photos here is a pain.–

I’ve got the kit with black strapping and black push studs…does anyone know of a source for just getting the correct white nylon push studs?
Rather not buy an entire new kit if I don’t have to…

Thanks!
Chet

The original post is 10 years old. That said, I scanned the Judges Guide for “straps” and did not get any hits. I personally have never heard the white stud story.

The pictures at the link below should be helpful.

http://moutons.org/Jaguar/Photos/Details/Bulkhead%20and%20frames/index.html

From the ‘Electrical, Alternator, etc’ section of the S2 Judging Guide:

WIRE FIXING:
Black plastic strapping with holes for nylon push through studs See references A, pages 185 (181) for picture

No mention that I could find of the colour of the studs (though I am sure white was as original). Perhaps a case could be made that ‘nylon’ suggests off-white - I suspect the black ones may be some other plastic.

From the web:

Natural Nylon stock is most commonly an off-white color, and it is also commonly available in white and black. That said, Nylon can be dyed into virtually any color.

Nothing in the S1 guide under fixing or wire. But now you’ve got my curiosity aroused. Hopefully someone will chime in regarding the white studs.

Harvey, I’m with you. Any addtl info for a S1?
I see this is a really old thread…
Where did you purchase the straps?
Thanks, Nick

Not to complicate the issue but after looking at Jerry Moutons engine compartment pictures, it looks like the holes in his original straps are bigger than those in the straps that the usuals sell.

Some even supply a strap that is a bit more stretchy than the usual stiff plastic variety. I have some of both, the stretchy stuff is much easier to fit and ends up looking snug and tight.

Per all the usual sources (Clausager, Haddock, E Type Forum Factory Fit) the studs are white or more correctly a natural nylon. I saw a guy dinged for black ones at a JCNA concours.

If you go to the E Type Forum Factory Fit, you’ll find pictures of frames with the correct strap locations.

I’ve hunted and hunted for the studs only and was never able to find any. One restorer said he can’t get them either and paints the black ones white to look proper. I tried that on a few and found the paint didn’t hold very well when the stud was pushed through the strap.

SNGB does carry a full kit with the proper studs, along with strapping kits that have the black studs, and I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I was glad I did, as I found the strap with that version was more like a proper rubber than the stiffer plastic-like strap with the normal kits (like Geo mentions above).

This is the correct kit from Barrett: C17001/2/1 Strap Kit
