[E-Type] Wood instrument panel, series 1 1/2 and 2

Has anyone installed one of those wood instrument panels you see on
e-bay? It appears you have to carve up the existing vinyl covering
to get it mounted. I do have a spare panel I could use. I know it’s
a taboo but you have to admit, it looks pretty! Dan…68 ots–

Dick Hile has, and it’s quite nice. The panel replaces the original
panel and as far as I know there is no cutting involved. Keep in
mind that the panels sold on eBay are all different and the guy
shows you what the one he’s selling looks like, if you don’t like
the grain just wait and he will offer another one soon. Ask Dick to
send you some pictures of his dash, it does look very beautiful and
it’s not a permanent mod.

I just fitted a walnut dash and ashtray trim to my Series 1 by
using raw veneer (from Vale Veneers off eBay) stuck with an iron-on
glue sheet. A couple more coats of two-pack clear varnish and it
will look like…

…brush-varnished, home-applied veneer. Hmmm. Maybe the wood trim
people at Brown’s Lane have had a bit more practice than me. Now
then, where did I put that sandpaper?–

Actually, I had my instrument panel and steering wheel redone by Saul
Chaplin, a lister, at www.britishautowood and not with a kit. His work is
excellent and I can recommend him highly. (NAYYY) I’ll be happy to send
pictures offline if you like.

Hi Dan,
Hurry up and put one in, I want to know how it looks
I think it would look fantastic but I have been reluctant to consider
it because it’s not original and I’m a 'stick in the mud’On Thursday, August 11, 2005, at 07:57 AM, Daniel Bierbrauer wrote:

While waiting for my replacement alternator to arrive by UPS
I needed a ‘‘fix-it fix’’ to keep me going so I replaced the
old instrument panel top with the wood one from the Canadian
ebay seller. (NAYYY) No cutting involved and the job took
about an hour. The hardest part is making sure you put all
the instrument wires back where they belong since you need
to disconnect, remove, and then install the instruments in
the new wood piece. There are also several little wood
screws that need to be removed from the old panel to allow
removal and at first I couldn’t find one and the panel
wouldn’t release. When all the screws are found and removed
the old panel comes right off and the new one is an
exact/excellent fit! It looks great with my wood wheel and
shifter knob. The old piece is in my ‘‘purist box’’ for the
next (after I’m dead) owner.

If the alternator doesn’t come by Wednesday I’ll have to
start rewiring the radiator fan circuit to allow ignition
off operation of the fans for cool-down. My motto is: ‘‘It’s
not yours if you didn’t take it apart and put it back
together’’.–

''My motto is: ‘‘It’s not yours if you didn’t take it apart and put

Excellent motto! I think I’ll adopt that one so long as nobody
cites the obvious follow-up line ‘‘That must be yours because it
looks like you took it apart and put it back together again’’

And FWIW my dash turned out nice with home-applied veneer, thanks
to a two-pack clear plastic coat product I have not come across
before. I also used it on my home-renewed steering wheel wood kit.
The plasdtic coat gives a deep factory look gloss and for the info
of UK people it is made by Rustins and was recommended to me by
Classic Wood who sell the new steering wheel wood kits for 45 UKP.
Ask for the Rustins plastic coat at any shop which stocks Rustin’s
wood dyes etc (which are pretty common) and they will order it for
you. The 250 mL size is pleny for a dozen coats on a dash and
steering wheel. It is loads better than any polyurethane varnish
I’ve used in the past.–

It is a beautiful piece of wood!! I love the burlwood look. Elegant.
But to be honest, being the only bit of wood on the entire panel, it looks out of place to me.

You need to replace the glove box cover also!. I replaced both the
glove box and instrument cluster wood, and, refinished the steering
wheel and shift knob to match. Makes a great looking dash!

Jim: How about some pictures of the wood glove box door.
I’m having trouble visualizing that.

Brad: What, first I have to put the dash in and THEN I have
to clean the guages too? Is there any end to the extremes
of labor I must endure? You have such high standards here!
By the way, the CD player came with the car–haven’t even
turned it on to see if it works! ;-)–

Hi Folks,
Since I’m stuck with the ZS at least till the pocket book heals a bit,
I thought I would Clean and rebuild the ZS that came on the car.
Amongst the multitude of “Oh my G__! What were they thinking when they
put these together?” I noticed that the back carb doesn’t have a
throttle bypass valve but the front one does. Did some of the 1.5’s
have this or has someone played mix and (not) match with the carbs?
Aside from making sure that there isn’t a vacuum connection that is
open on the manifold for the non-bypass carb and short of replacing
them with SU’s would you change anything such as try to find a bypass
or block of the one that has it? Thanks for your thoughts.
Cheers,

A friend of mine put one of the same panels into his '70 OTS, and I must say
it looks fantastic. The pictures that were posted, to be honest, do not do
justice to how nice these things look.

I just blocked both of mine off. So it runs leaner at deceleration, it makes no difference. It’s there as a smog thing anyway.
