ive changed my setting and now receiving email notifications on all topics. how do i change it back to only being notified when i start or post on a topic?

from email?

Your question answers itself: see the top right corner of any reply. If it shows an envelope, then it arrived via email, otherwise it was posted online.
As I understand it you can add to a topic via email, but I don’t think you can add as a reply to a specific post or user via email.
TBH I haven’t really delved into the email interface all that much, other than just to verify that it works.
