Hi all. I’ve been off the list for quite a while (other cars, work, etc. etc.). The '69 OTS needs a new exhaust system - I have never liked the sound of this stainless steel system (cannot recall the brand - bought it 20 years ago.) I will keep the cast manifolds and replace everything from the downpipes back.
Who makes a nice-sounding system these days? Stainless Steel is OK with me if it sounds nice.
I went with the Bell stainless except for the mufflers for which I bought mild steel. To my ear stainless mufflers sometimes sound a bit tinny, possibly because thinner metal is used.
There was a thread a while ago (this year) about systems. I installed a SS Bell system and spent an inordinate amount of time fitting it ('66 S1 OTS) including taking 3/4" and 7/8" out of the down pipes and pie cutting in several places to get ground clearance to where it should be. I also had to narrow the 2 rear mounts on the mufflers to fit between the rubber mounts under the body. Other than that, they seem overpriced.
i have yet to install the bell system i bought so i cant comment on the sound.
the system i bought was the standard exhaust but with the super sport(less restrictive) center mufflers.
I will be curious to hear how you like it. I went with the standard Bell SS system. I think it has mellowed with use, sounds pretty similar to my original system it replaced.
I would like to hear Geo’s system with the mild steel mufflers.
I just installed a mild steel system from Jaguar Heritage. I like the sound: a little deeper and louder than what I removed ( Midas SS muffler , the rest mild steel). Overall happy but it took some fiddling to get a proper fit
I went with Jaguar branded mufflers, mild steel intermediate pipes and resonators from one of the usuals. SNG, IIRC. For the down pipes I went with stainless steel. I’m happy with it, it’s pleasant, not loud and obnoxious.
Jeff put a Bell system SS system on his car a year or two back, and is very happy with it. I think it sounds nice. I will be putting one on my car in a few weeks. Cost is hard to beat - $575 for the complete system, headpipes to resonators, from Welsh.
