Flat, Gloss, or Satin Black for parts on XK140

General restoration question here on black paint use for general parts on 1955 XK140.

Is there a standard used?

Also does anyone know the correct colour the bumper spacers are supposed to be?

Thank you,
Sean Patrick

I have always used Rustoleum Gloss Black enamel over damp proof primer.
The factory used some sort of cheap gloss black, and did not use any primer, and their black did not stay glossy for very many years, especially in areas affected by heat and road dirt, but in hidden areas such as behind the voltage regulator I found gloss black.

The factory used RDP: runny drippy black.

Good one. And it calls to mind a picture I saw somewhere – probably Viart – where a worker is shown on the '120 line with a brush in one hand and a quart of black in the other doing touch up.

I am sure this is not according to Hoyle, but as a practical matter I found that old parts with some metal degradation (i.e., removed rust and general abuse) look better painted with a satin finish than with gloss. Gloss shows all the flaws. Satin hides a lot and looks better than the original gloss after six months of usage.
