Fuel tank problem in a vacuum

Ok this site has been so helpful Inow have a new question, 1989 6 cylinder xj40 my fuel tank seems to go into a vacuum causing stalling issues. I leave the cap loose and no more stalling, any ideas where I should start?

Not something I’ve experienced myself, but sounds like some kind of vent line issue. From what I remember, I believe it only has the one vent line running up to the fuel door area, correct?

Will check after I get in the trunk, the latch came off the lock after I finally got the key to work on the lock, I am thinking of drilling a hole in the trunk floor so i can get my arm in and release the latch.

before you go cutting holes here and there, the try this (from the archive)

Hi All,

Just had the same problem. My 1990 model delivered in Australia
has four slots on the boot for afixing our various sized
registration number plates. My number plates are fairly shallow
and fixed via two upper slotted holes. There are two extra lower
slotted holes for fixing different sized plates. These are blocked
with rubber gromments. I removed the right hand one and with a
small screw driver was able to easily release the catch. Then found
the rocker release mechanism had broken. Cheap plastic on a luxury
car!!

Thank you , will have a look when the wife gets home, her miata is in for paint so she has been driving my cat in the interim

Success, I found the magic hole to release the trunk lock! Now I can check the fuel venting. Adjusted the trunk latch so it works smoothly .
