FW: [s-type] distorted cam covers

Ed,

If this is a 4.0 litre V8 the upper chain tensioners are a very well-known
and documented issue. The originals were plastic as you say. Jaguar replaced
these with a different version also made of plastic. In time, these also
cracked so the final version with the aluminium body solved the problem and
was fitted to almost all 4.2litre engines. The Al ones need shorter mounting
bolts.

Other known issues with the AJ8 engine are with the water pump where with
early ones the impeller detaches itself - the cure is to fit and uprated
pump. Also the coolant expansion tank cracks causing slow loss of coolant.
On a RHD car look for coolant drops on the ground behind the right hand
front wheel.

The five speed auto which is a Ford 55R5 needs the fluid and filter changed
at around 40k miles. If not, although it is claimed to be sealed for life,
the life you actually get won’t impress you.

Other than the above and the odd electrical glitch these are good cars and
excellent value for money.

Picked up the car, and they showed me the old parts.
The chain tensioners.
I had assumed it would have been wear of the tensioner face.
But the issue is that the whole assembly[s] is made of plastic. The
housings had split and the cracks were starting to widen , As they said ,
eventually the split gets worse and the tensioner itself falls out and then
you see the bank manager.

They have now fitted heat shields as well as new cam covers.
Obviously a need as they are made for the engine in the bigger saloon.
Jaguar must also be well aware of the tensioner housing problem as the
replacements now have alloy bodies.

Eric

Thanks . it is the 4 litre.

The automatic indeed had to be replaced , although it has
been religiously serviced. So , yes, I wasn’t impressed. And
the water pump and various plastic coolant items.
The ign switch caused much problems before it was identified.
it was causing the battery to drain flat over night by not
switching off properly.

As a general rule I wouldn’t think plastic and engine parts
are a good combination . Certainly not here where the ambient
temp can be very high.–
