Gear selector locked in Park

Hi there!
When I got in my car this morning I found that I could not get the gear selector out of Park. This had never happened before. I followed the instructions in my owners manual describing how to “unlock” it. It unlocks fine, but every time I put it back in Park it won’t unlock and I have to go through the drill again.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Good chance it is the microswitch on the footbrake that has gone they can be replaced by drilling the rivets and fixing with nuts & bolts. The replacement unit is Bl**dy expensive. I may have a Type/Part # for a suitable replacement, I’ll look later.
Also have you tried applying the brake and waggling the selector quite vigorously?

It may also be the NIP micro switch alongside the selector hence the waggling may show it to be intermittent.

I believe these were the ones I used:

Hi Neil!
Thank you for your response!
I have wrestled with the shifter quite vigorously, to the point I was
concerned I might break something. I will explore the micro switches
in question. Thank you for the link to the parts.

Michael, do you hear the click from the gear surround when you press the brake pedal to take it out of park. If not then you should test the brake pedal switch or the solenoid which unlocks the gear lever.

Michael, sometimes it’ just a case of wear causing a depression on the button and others have either repositioned the switch or filled the dent with araldite or similar.

If the dimensions of that part don’t match, post and I’ll look on an old PC to check the Part #.

Good luck

Hi Neil!

Thank you for your response.
How do I get at that switch? I assume it’s near the selector , down in
the bowels of the console.
Thank you for your help!
