Harmonic Balancer & Pulley Orientation

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying the weekend.

I removed the harmonic balancer and pulleys to remove the oil pan. In doing so, I separated the pulleys from the balancer itself. (My 4.2 car has aircon and PS. 4 belts, plenty of pulleys)

I marked both damper and pulley before separating, but in my rookie haste, I did it poorly. I now see there are other marks that make things a bit ambiguous. There are four potential orientations when I reassemble it and I wonder which is correct to assure balance.

So,

  1. Does it matter?
  2. Can I balance this at home? If so, how?
  3. Is this something someone else could balance for me? Any mechanic? A machinist?
  4. Or can this only be done with the crank and reciprocating / rotating masses all known?
  5. What do I need to know?

Thanks
Liam

If you haven’t cleaned the pulley or damper,if you look closely you might see some witness marks on the inside end of the pulley where it locates slightly inside the damper?
In regards to balancing the pulley itself isn’t a large mass so not absolutely imperative that it’s balanced. You could get the damper and pulley re balanced as an assembly separate from the crank. Not the absolute way to do,it but we’re not talking of a full blown race engine are we?

  1. Unlikely to be so far out of balance that it would matter.
  2. No.
  3. Yes, a specialist engine machine shop could do it for you.
  4. Shouldn’t be needed, however the only caveat being that the HB mounts onto a cone, which might make things tricky for the shop.
  5. You made point 3 twice  (Sorry, couldn’t resist).

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure I’ve done the same thing before without any problem.

Thank you for the replies.
