Finally got around to installing the ones that I got from SNG Barratt. Here’s a picture of how they look:

The tapered pins pictured above are indeed called “cotter pins” by cyclists. They were used on mostly pre 1980 bikes to hold the “crank set,” consisting of the two pedal arms and spider for the front gears, to the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket consists of the axle, bearings and mounting hardware. This older system was universally replaced by modern, “cotterless” crank sets which bolt onto the axle or have the axle pressed onto the gear side of the crank set.
