The original Lucas starter, on a six banger, works quite well. Tweety’s was original , with over 200,000 miles on it, over 50 years old, and worked just fine.

I bought the Gustafson starter for it in case it ever died, and ended up never needing it. The same Lucas starter, on a high compression four-cylinder, however, is awful. That’s why I changed it.

There is a member here, who shall remain unnamed, who found out that when you leave the oil galley plug out of the block, behind the flywheel, also makes it difficult to pump up oil pressure.

Ouch. Not to mention difficult to remedy. In the Cobra, I only had to pull the inlet manifold and tap the plug in.
A newly-built engine, machined by Ladd Fowler of Palo Alto, with 1 thou bearing clearances, running 13-15psi… smelt a rat
