How do i get the burble on my xk8

MY xk8 as they all are very quiet, nice, however i would like the burble that a v8 gives,so am thinking of altering the existing exhaust.
i have been told if i replace the centre silencer and put in a H system that will do it.
so looked it up and there is a X system also.
has anyone done this and is the H advisable or the X.
hopefully someone can help.any other ideas welcome.
thank you
RICHARD.

A lot of guys remove the 2 rear mufflers. As for the x vs h here’s a link

Hello there! This is my first post since joining.

Like others, I have deleted the two sets of boxes behind the center muffler. There is a bit of an increase in performance, probably because I replaced the pinched section where it goes over the axle.

The sound?

Meh. It’s not to my taste. It’s louder on throttle, but my 6-speed is pretty lazy, even in sport mode, so it doesn’t hold the first three gears long enough to make the ‘burble’ very enjoyable. Honestly, in normal driving it sounds like a tired old truck that has a hole in the muffler. Not good for a European sports car with 60k miles on the clock.

I’m deciding what to do next. Dig into reprogramming the transmission in sport mode, or more practically, refit the mufflers just aft of the center muffler so that it’s more refined until I really stomp on the go faster pedal.

I’ve thought of going aftermarket to tune the sound. I had a set of ‘delta’ mufflers (Flowmaster 10) on my other car that were used as resonators that produced a nice song, but as the ones fitted were not stainless, they didn’t last long and I ended up replacing them with a full stainless cat back kit.

Hello Jag-lovers
I took the 4 silencers after the centre box. Had stainless straight pipes. Sounds amazing.

Mal, I have heard meh reviews from guys removing the two mufflers right after the center section, but somewhat better sound removing the far rear two mufflers. When you replaced the over axle pipe, did you go under the axle, or over again?
Richard, as for removing all 4 and going straight pipes, I’m sure it’s pretty loud now! Unfortunately it probably louder than what most guys on the forum are looking for. I like a loud exhaust depending on the vehicle, and whether or not it’s a daily driver. I’m an old muscle car guy at heart lol

4 is the way to go. Brilliant noise local company did it.not over axle. Pipes not flattened at all. I think they charged me £130 per side. Stainless with new tips in chrome sounds good… Will send you a video if your interested.

I would love a video! Do you have one doing a drive-by?

Jaguar needs to know about this error in what was likely many hundreds of thousands of dollars in R&D.

Welcome to Anoraks Anonymous!

I went over the axle.

Yes, I’m in the camp that is interested not so much in shear sound volume as in performance and a tuned sound.

The car does quiet when off the throttle, but it quiets suddenly (automatic transmission) which is the main culprit in the whole ‘hole’ in the muffler syndrome.

It really needs a smooth shifting manual for that satisfying experience. The J-Gate is okay, but it’s just so darn lazy going between the gears. It’s disappointing for the so-called ‘fixed’ transmission. Maybe there’s A Trans-Go throttle body in my car’s future. I’m trying to love my car for what it is, but a little disappointed that the redesign didn’t give the drivetrain more.

Jaguar are not alone in pinching the pipes to aid in the assembly process.

Has anyone replaced the center muffler with an X or H pipe? What sort of muffler did you place aft of it?

Gotcha. I’ve read lots of threads that claim a decent performance increase by going under the axle and getting rid of the crimped factory pipe. I’ve also read that the center box is basically an x pipe and that no real gains or difference seems to be made by swapping it. At least that’s what I’ve gotten from what I’ve read

Ah, Ok. Thanks for that info.

I’m now researching this transmission. It does seem that I’m experiencing a common complaint with them in all the vehicles where they are installed. The Sonnax Zip Kit may be a cure. I would like to talk to a few people who have installed it in their own vehicles. The kit is listed as an easy rebuild item (no modification to the valve body necessary) when the transmission is sluggish to change gears as it ages. Mine has only got about 60k miles on it, so not sure if this is due to wear or design. I’ll try a fluid and filter change - seems like at 60k, it should be due and might solve my complaint. It seems to upshift in manual in a reasonable amount of time, but downshifts are not inspiring. It seems to want to consult with upper management and the Environmental Protection Agency, get a confirmation memo from them in triplicate with proper signatures before it is willing accommodate my request for a bit more rpm from the engine.

Did a fluid change yesterday. All is well, knock on dash. Shifts are much quicker, and Sport mode seems to have awakened as well. Thank goodness for a local independent Jaguar specialist. (o:,’
