Ignition advance

Hello Forum,

  1. Is it necessary to set the ignition timing dynamically with a 123 distributor?
  2. Can you confirm that the ignition advance is 10 degrees for a 4.2 liter ?
  3. At what engine speed should the 10 degree advance be reached ?
  4. Should I unplug the depression capsule to adjust?
  5. Is it necessary to check in advance, ignition at 3000/3500 rpm?
What should this high-rate advance be?

Thanks a lot

Hi Philbert, my 123 has 16 settings. I picked a curve by laying each option over the workshop upper and lower settings (there are two “knee points” if you graph the workshop table). I picked a setting on the 123 by picking a 123 curve that fell between the workshop curves. My 3.8 has 10 degrees initial advance - set this whilst the vacuum port is disconnected as is done for a standard dizzy, this applies at normal idle. Don’t know the setting for a 4.2 E type. The 123 will stick to the curve setting that you select - you could check with a dial back timing light, I haven’t bothered. I can send the 3.8 graph tonight. Paul

Engine speed at 750rpm,set timing at 10 degrees BTDC with vacuum advance disconnected.

Thank you very much, I managed to reach 750 rmp by playing on the screw of richness of the carburetor and idling of the engine
