Indicators not ticking

Hi Folks
I have a 1989 JagXJ40 Sovereign in the UK
The turn signals make no sound when operating. They should make a ticking noise
I have read that there should be a speaker by the steering column, but cannot find it.
Can anyone give me more information?

Thanks

The ticking sound and the flashing of the light are two separate mechanisms, and usually are not in sync with one another. Check your fuses. It could be the fuse that controls the ticking mechanism is blown.

Found the speaker and it is OK. There is a sound module beneath the glove box and this has a multi pin connector block. One of the pins was not making contact, easily fixed and now all working

where exactly is the speaker and connector? I have the same issue.

Hi David

The speaker is inside the steering column cover

It is quite tricky to get to and even harder to remove, but there is an easier way to check it

Remove the trim panel in front of the driver’s knees

Remove the lower steering column cover

The speaker is inside a metal bracket to the right of the column directly above the ignition switch

The easiest way to test is to disconnect the plug/socket in the speaker lead

Get a small radio or phone and use a 3.5mm jack plug lead, strip the other end and connect 2 pins to touch on the plug contacts

Play some music to test the speaker

Also on the right is a black box like a relay, that makes the sound for the headlights on, see photo. Check connection and soldering

Remove the cover panel below the glove box.

You will see numerous relays, ECUs etc

There is an audible warning device, see attached photo

The large connection from this had a loose pin on mine.

Switch the indicators on and try wiggling the connections

Also check the earth screw, see attached photo, as this was loose

It is easy to remove the device and check the solder connections are good

Good luck

Best Regards

Thanks, I found the speaker, but can’t find the correct connector, not a big deal my 94 dodge doesn’t work also.

There are 2 short wires from the speaker to a plug nearby

I will try again but it goes into taped bundles and I couldn’t find the right one.

Is it possible the wires go directly to the relay on the right side? I have an 89 xj40

I have the same car. Is yours right hand drive?

There are 2 wires from the speaker, quite short, and not far from the steering column they terminate in a small connector plug. This can be disconnected to test the speaker. All components connect to the loom via a plug to enable easy assembly and replacement.

left hand drive is what I have…

Connections and layout just the same but mirror image
