[jag-news-discussion] New entry level luxury Jaguar!

Instead of making the Bertone B99, Jaguar is making an entry
level XS to compete with the like of 1-series, C-class, and
A4. The only good thing that come out of this is that it is
affordable.

Caution is in order…

“This illustration hints at what Jaguar might be thinking it needs to take
on the competition.” In other words, they don’t have a clue, but they
continue as if it was fact. “From this angle, the design is similar to the
current XF sedan. The headlights are slimmer, the grill is wider and
flatter, and the air intakes in the front fascia are bigger than those found
on the XF.” Uh, not “the” design, but Brenda Priddy & Company’s SWAG of a
design. “A stylistically scaled-down version of its larger offerings would
be a safe move for Jaguar, though possibly not enough to lure car buyers out
of their German luxury sedans.” Safe? Safe!? Does the writer have so short
an attention span not to recall what happened with the X-Type, a
“scaled-down version of [Jaguar’s] larger offerings”? After an initial jump
out of the gate, it had no legs and sales quickly dwindled. It looked so
much like the XJ from the front that unless you had something to put the
size into perspective, you couldn’t tell them apart. It cheapened the big
car and didn’t help the small car.

I know Ian Callum wants to keep some commonality to the look across the
marque, like Merc and BMW do with their grilles, but there’s no way they are
going to create an XJ or XF that looks like it’s been left in the dryer too
long. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the C-X75 styling cues in the
car.
