How a plan to save Jaguar got deep-sixed

LOS ANGELES - As they sat around glumly at the dealer launch meetings for
the XJ sedan in Phoenix in early 2004, a small klatch of Jaguar’s U.S.
managers began to ponder their fate.

They were hopeful about the new XJ but could not escape the fact that Ford
Motor Co.'s British luxury brand was stumbling badly.

The entry-level X-Type sedan was foundering, and England was about to begin
shipping an unwanted wagon variant to U.S. shores. The S-Type was ancient,
and the new XK coupe was still 18 months away. Sales were plummeting.

And things would only get worse. Within a few weeks, that redesigned XJ
would be greeted with all the enthusiasm of a polite golf clap…
