Labor Time-XK Engine Bearings

Yer digging in some very old Memory Alpha banks, old man…:grimacing:

I haven’t scraped a babbitted bearing since…1977?
That was then a local volunteer fire department had me rebuilt the Continental 6-banger engine and 3rd-member trans, on a 1923 Kelly-Springfield fire truck!

Similar to this, but chain drive/external band brakes, on the rears, only.

A real beast to drive!

Frankly, if the journals aren’t scored, they rarely are OOR.

I did a fair few shell swaps, on Jaguars, where the customer just “wanted to get by,” and they worked fine. Same with Datsuns.

On Formula Vees, it’s pretty standard to do a rod bearing change every couple of races, due to the high stresses on them, plus their in-built lack of positive cap location, and I never lost a rod bearing on them.

On some Vees, I could even do it with the engine in situ!
