Lucas RB310 Voltage Reg Problems

My Lucas Rb310 voltage regulator has stopped working – it started to click like mad.
So, downloaded a Lucas document and cleaned and adjusted the contacts- still not working.
Took it off and took to my local auto electric specialist and he tried to set it and he reckons the coils are week and I need a replacement.
The Lucas RB310 no 37189 is a control box that is quite rare and I wonder if anyone has converted these to electronic.
I am thinking of using product from “Dynamo Regulators Ltd” product DVR3 Positive earth….
This will fit quite well in the old box, but I can’t find out what amps the old voltage reg is – 22amps or 25amps???
So, the question is
What amps and has anyone done this before??/

Any help would be great.

no doubt you will have some knowledgeable replies here soon…but meanwhile if you will web search for your Lucas RB310…you will find quite a few sites with info, including mgaguru.com, and some on ebay too. and look for Wilton Auto Electric…used to do hidden conversions.

A Google search found this all-electronic one.

Hi nick
Due to me being tight fisted old git spending £290 quid on a re fub Rb310 hurts me…
the guys at dynamo regulator Ltd electronic conversion is only £80.00 and they say I will get a better charge - plus it’s a replacement for the 3 bobin reg…
I will get one and fit - will do a write up on it … it should be easy fix - just need to find out what amps I need - I don’t have a electric fan - by the way I put on the uprated fan that guy broad sells and it outstanding - low noise at med revs and no cooling issues in high temps …well 28oC … but I digress a little from the main topic…

Gezzler,

It would be unusual for a coil to become “weak” unless the lacquer on the wire has broken down or there is corrosion or dirt causing current to bypass the coil. Below is a link to the service manual which you may have seen but the clearances are critical.

You also need to check your generator as the problem may lie there. The coils will click in and out normally as that is how they regulate voltage and current, on the RB310 there are three coils, voltage, current and cut-out. The amps you regulate to depends on the capacity of your generator.

Have a read of the document but first read the Lucas document below which is a great read to describe how the regulator works. I think between these two docs you will find all the data you need,
