[Lumps!] Hi guys manifold question LT1

Happy New Years everyone. Its been a while. I have a
gentleman with an 89 convertible and an LT1. He is asking
me to build him an exhaust and I do not want to go the
Sanderson route. I have asked, and he says its not a raised
exhaust port LT1. What exhaust manifold (I know, rams
horns) options do I have on one of these motors? Thanks
guys.

Is this a LT1 from the 70’s? Or did the iron head LT1’s
from '92 thru '97 have the older style square ports rather
than the raised ports of the aluminum heads?

I guess some have used shorty headers, but those (most
headers long & short) come with the traditional problems of
underhood heat, leaking, and cracking. Could be that Andrew
Weinberg of Jaguar Specialties may have some suggestions.

Are you ready to move to Texas yet to escape the cold??

Regards!

Some more info. Its a 97 Camaro motor with aluminum heads. That
tells me it will be a raised port, D port head. Is anyone running a
rams horn manifold on these aluminum heads?–

Ok. Exhaust ports are in standard location. INTAKE ports are
raised. Has anyone tried any of the aftermarket rams horns style
manifolds in their XJS?–

‘‘D port head. Is anyone running rams horn manifolds on
these aluminum heads?’’

Yes, and I did port match them to the aluminum heads with
a die grinder, using the appropriate steel exhaust gaskets
as a template - did some work on the Aluminum heads exhaust
ports as well using those same exhaust gaskets. One has to
be careful along the top inner edges of the exhaust
manifold ports to leave enough ‘‘meat’’ to ensure a seal to
the gasket and exhaust port. You can get most all of them
to match up quite well - and I don’t claim to be an ace
with the die grinder. I used the manifolds on the ‘97
LT1/4L60E that I put in the wife’s ‘89 back in ‘2004 and
never had a problem or leak with them.
Of note, the rams horns used on the LT1 Corvettes are
similar cast iron, but are covered with an aluminum heat
shield, but the shield can be removed if one so desires.
These are made for the ‘‘D’’ ports, but can still use some
port matching work. The manifold outlets on these are 2
1/2’’ as I recall, but after the cats and crossover, we
reduced the exhaust pipes to 2 1/4’’ I did that with a '96
Corvette LT1/4L60E that my son and I put in the '76
Corvette I bought new in '76 and is still in the family -
left the heat shields on, and full OBDII with ALDL
connector port so it is legal wherever it may go.
I do have a spare set of the earlier rams horns ported for
the ‘‘D’’ ports in our Garage Attic in Austin, TX.–

Rob,

Yes, a bit vague, as there was a LT1 Corvette back in the
late 60’s or early 70’s.
I was referring to the '92 thru '96 LT1 powered Corvettes
with the aluminum shielded cast iron rams horns - they are
cast for the Aluminum head LT1 ‘‘D’’ ports (can still be
cleaned up a bit) and do have a 2.5 inch exhaust manifold
outlet.–

Rob:

Good to hear from you. colder than a bear’s … up your
way, huh? but, I suspect that the Taj mahal you built in
which to do pipe magic is warmed.

I think Andrew markets headers with the necessary shape to
clear XJ platforms. Not all do that as I hear.

I like tuber headers. My jeep has an OEM version to get the
last bit of oomph from it’s historic OHV straight six. So
far so good, well over 200 miles and 20 years!!

I think the 68 - 87 Jaguar saloons and the XJS share a
platform. In theory, the pipes that fit the S’s series
saloons and the XJS can be exchanged.

I got a pair of new iron ram horns with my engine trans
package. From the boxes, I could not tell the ID of the
maker. Definitely no sign of the generator bracket of
originals. sand straight across rather than having two
lumps giving them the ram horn name.

They included four ports each for an air rail. I revised an
ancient pair for SMOG folk’s pleasure. I chose not to try
to drill and tap for the LT! fittings. Big holes concerned
me.

I did have to grind a considerable bit of metal away to get
valve cover clearance. Plenty of meat and it came off well.

Plus, a small flat to drill and tap for the EGR take off. I
used the GM pipe, it looked like it was done by the factory
when done.

Alas, I chose not to port match. Pushing my luck on the
mod’s already!!!

And, High temp O2 safe RTV in lieu of gaskets. worked just
fine. Except a flange gasket of some composition, they came
with the horns, I think!!

Oh, my 94 LT1 is iron headed, kinda like some say I am.

Bending the down pipes, duck soup for you. Mine came from
Andrew’s affiliate in Florida, Sun Coast. I drilled and
welded on a bung for the O2 sensors. Came out just fine.
The driver side pipe had a slight jog built in to clear the
steering.

Alas, I’ll probably have to drop a down pige out the
starter… Dreaming of 70F to do that job in.

Not enough demand to develop headers of your design, I
suppose.

Hi all, I’ve been reading this thread interesting

Just a note- the 92-96 Corvette cast iron manifolds are exactly right for the LT1- correct ports and all. And they have a center dump design, like we need for the Jags.

But- they can only be used with Corvette accessories. If used on a Camaro or Caprice engine, the right side manifold hits the AC compressor. Very disappointing…

I used the ‘‘new’’ Corvette Ram Horn manifolds from Speedway.
Ported them to match and cut off the unneeded ugly
alternator mounts and ground that end to match. This car
had a Pontiac Firebird engine and accessories including the
lower mounted AC compressor.

They fit fine and have been working on the car for a couple
of years now with no leaks/problems.

When I originally used them on my SII, I had them
Cermichrome and that coating lasted for many years… much
more durable than the High Temp paint I used the last time.

Have lots of photos of the port matching and cutting off of
the ends, but this site is too much trouble to post them
on… contact me by email if interested.–

speedway sells. But the speedways ones come out off the
head 4 1/2’’ and I’m not sure I have that much clearance
between the head at the rear cylinders ( 7 & 8) and the
frame rails.–

I just checked with Speedway and their ‘‘chrome’’ ones fit in
the same location as the Ram Horns (dump port).

They are roundish and look like they stick out less
distance… will be using them on ,y '71 XJ soon and they
will be matched to the Edelbrock heads - but it is a '95 SBC
ZZ4 crate motor with the different heads. I have plenty of
room for most manifolds and no smog is required.–

Yup. That’s why I need to check the space on someones xjs.
I don’t have mine anymore, and I have a customer bringing a
car from 4 hrs away, so I need to make sure that if I order
these for his build, they will fit, because I don’t have
the space for his car to sit if I have to reorder different
manifolds to fit.–

I have seen several 1990’s camaros/firebirds - LT1’s in the
wrecking yards with their exhaust manifolds still on. They gather
and stand above the heads exhaust ports. I thought only the
aftermarket SLP’s were shaped that way? Has anyone tried these?
Looks like it would give us a lot more room to tie into exhaust
pipes. Might have to deal with added engine bay heat…–

I have a similar project with a 1969 Avanti II, it has a 327 SBC and ramhorns. I want to install an LT1 and ordered the Speedway manifolds like you mentioned. Looking at them tonight, it appears that they only need the center two mounting holes relocated about an 1/8 and the ports line up with no porting needed. Possible? I would love to see the pictures you mentioned, but I dont see an email address to send to.

thanks!

Tom
