[Lumps!] how I saved $100 and not get greasy

I was all set to climb under a greasy car in the junkyard tomorrow to get a
speedometer 90 angle adapter. With little to loose I decided to disassemble
the failed unit supplied to me when I bought the car a couple weeks ago.
Spinning one side had no effect on the other. There are 2 cover plates
which are peened into place. Careful use of an old chisel and I managed to
remove one of the cover plates. What I found inside was good looking gears
but they were two far apart to mesh. The male end portion had slide out
from the body of the unit preventing the gears from meshing. I degreased
and cleaned everything then applied some JB weld and pressed it back in to
the right amount with a vise. Replaced the cover plate and JB welded that
too. Works great. Tomorrow I’ll fill with grease and try it out. Sure
beats $100+ for a new one and climbing under a greasy car in the junkyard!

Oh, come on, we Lumpers live to get greasy! Glad to hear you were able to fix it
yourself. That’s the other thing we Lumpers love to do!

Although I generally like to work on my cars, I don’t like to get greasy
without good reason. In fact I wear nitrile gloves when I do just about any
work on the car. I also go through a lot of degreasing to make working on
it easier which also makes it easier to find leaks.
Not anal, just clean!
