[Lumps!] how to tell a 700R4 from a 4L60?

hi guys,

Although I’m definately sticking to V12, I’m about to embark on some
negotiations with my local friendly scrappy in order to buy a 4 speed
GM tranny off him. I know I want one as late as possible (ie. just
before 4L60E), but is there any way to tell a 700R4 from the later
4L60? Any differences in casing, ID tags or whatever? I’m expecting
to pay about Euro 1,000 (USD 850-ish) for a recon, and I want my
money’s worth…

thanks,–

The 700R4 was made from the early 80’s(real early) till around 1989. If you
can get a trans from anything from around 89 up to the 4L60E, you will have
a 4L60 trans. One difference is the input shaft for the converter, early(I
think) was 28 splines, late trans is 30 or 31 splines.
MAKE SURE you get a trans from a Z28, Trans Am or any HI PO 350. DO NOT get
one from a truck or taxi cab, or big car. Trucks and big cars do not have
the good converter or the almost full throttle kick down.
