[Lumps!] ignition switch

Any problems using a 1989 chev. fuel inj. ignition switch instead
of the stock 71 e type ser 3 switch? Thanks in advance.–

Are they interchangeable physically? I don;t think so- most GM cars use a large rectangula switch mounted down low on the column and actuated by a metal rod from the key cylinder. That’s what I recall seeing on many Camaros and nearly everything else GM.

Ignition is ignition- that stock E-type switch should be fine and I’m pretty sure they’re still available new…

Now if you’re doing some conversion and want to provide power to the new engine (or fuel injection harness), that increased power load shouldn’t be going through the ignition switch anyway. A dedicated relay, controlled by the ignition switch, should be doing that…

I hope that helps

Andrew, thanks for your good advice. I’m going to mount the switch
in another location not in the dash. I think it would work because
I have a stand alone f/i harness. But using a relay is a good
idea. Thanks Mike.–

Mike:

A new GM switch? If used, it may be no better than a used
e-type switch.

As I expect you know, the switch of whatever genre,
has other duties. Ignition in crank ands run. Crank the engi
engine. Accessories in run in ACCESS position.

I definitely agree with Andrew. Use relays wherever po
possible. Oh, and a lighter key ring!!!

Just suffered travails, largely caused by an ignition
switch that was just plumb sore out. A NOS switch
via David Boger fixed so many things.

Caveat:

You will probably need one ort more diodes to
prevent feed back. Don’t ask…

You shouldn’t have any trouble,. If the original switch works to turn on an ignition fed units now (like the gauges, wipers, etc.,.) it can also be used a turn on a relay to whatever (GM fuel injection harness???) you are using.

If you’re not sure how to wire that or what relay to use, Email me off list and I will send you a wiring diagram with the correct part number relay as well…

Thanks
