[Lumps!] Need info on lumping an XJ6 with a TH400

In reply to a message from Andrew Robertson sent Sat 18 Sep 2010:

Andrew, thanks for your encouragement. Our car is lighter
than the '69 Calais the engine came from, and since the
motor will be mostly stock I don’t think we’re in danger of
damaging the input shaft.

According to Dave William’s engine weight list (everything’s
true on the internet) the Cad motor is only about 20 lbs
heavier than the Jag motor, and I’ll be ditching all the EFI
stuff and 90% of the wiring harness. With 3 avionics
technicians and me on our team re-wiring isn’t a problem.

We’ll also cut off the bottom side of the hood, bottom side
of the trunk, finish gutting the door metal, and probably
find some other ways to trim weight.–

Bringing back a zombie thread, but only because I have a link to pictures. It took me seven years, but I got the Caddy motor in and took it to the 24 Hours of Lemons race in Houston.

We had lot of overheating problems due to a crusty radiator. The car was a crowd favorite, and the judges loved it. When we did have it out on track, I could drag most cars on the straights with half throttle. I wasn’t using full throttle because it would overheat faster. The shocks were completely blown, and under braking it would dart around. In the carousel the suspension would settle and I was able to make a pass there.

Before the next race I’m replacing the radiator and shocks, rewiring the alternator, and hopefully installing a fuel cell in place of the twin tanks. BTW, we deleted the power assist on the rack and the steering at speed wasn’t noticeably heavy.

Thanks, Erik.

Double enjoyment.

  1. The trip back in time. Folks then and now. Bill, in my mind at this time. He and I are near contemporary. I’ll always remember his picture of his V12 on a snow covered road, at night, with lights on ! A picture for all ages…

  2. The great pictures at the race in Houston. Truly, great morning entertainment.

Thanks for the memories… +more…
