[Lumps!] Rattling under load

Hello all,
I took my car on a short drive this evening. I hear a rattling
sound under load. I live around the foothills and as I’m going uphill there
is a rattling not unlike marbles in a drier. On level roads or going downhill
it seems fine. I’m thinking the distributor might not be up to the task and
will change that tomorrow (I’ve got one w/ a 50,000 volt coil I bought last
week). Or is this something to do w/ the transmission? I’m still in the break
in period and tweaking things to make sure they work so I’m trying to sort
out these “challenges” as they appear.
All input welcome!

Thanks,
Jeff K.

Sounds like old fashioned pinging/spark knock/detonation to me. Timing too
far advanced ? Low octane fuel? Too lean? Those would be the most obvious
items to consider…

Check under the hood when revving up the engine to see if you can find a
mechanical problem, like dizzy cap, fan, lose bolt etc. Retard the
ignition timing to cure pinking, if it’s pinking it won’t do it when
parked, only under load. Check it’s got oil and oil pressure, it could
be big ends. You can hear this at idle too by raising to about 3,000
and then blipping the throttle hard thus putting the engine under load
for a split second - they get real noisy. On the road they are noisy
under load and as the rev’s rise usually, often more noisy as the oil
thins when it gets hotter.
