On Jaguars rust is like the Iceberg that sunk the Titanic, the majority of
the problem is under the surface. So just grinding down the rust on the
surface won’t solve the problem. 9 times out of 10, the rust has eaten away from
the inside of the body like an insidious cancer that has got to be cut out, or
else have the rusted panel removed and the damaged assessed from the panels
backside. I found out the hard way! About 8 months after putting a beautiful
new $2,000 Regency Red paint job on my 1977 XJ-6L, I saw a little spot & then
another that looked as if some sand or dirt had gotten into the paint before
it had dried. But the sad truth was it was rust that was rotting through the
sheet metal just below the Running Jaguar badge on both of the front wings, a
look behind the rusted panels led me to make a tough decision, the removal &
repair of both of the front wings (fenders) assemblies and removing (cutting
out) all traces of the cancerous rusted out areas along the sill line and
anywhere else I could find it, then undercoat the affected areas making sure I
had gotten the problem, then I primered and had the people who had painted
the car earlier reshoot the entire area that ran from the top of the front
wheel well to the door opening, down to the sill. Luckily with the new computer
technology that they use to scan and match an exact hue of the paint being
replaced it now looks like it did when I first had it painted, no trace of
anything ever having been done. I saved the part we cut out just to remind me that
the rust works its way out from inside of the Jaguar bodies. Why the British
lads skimped on undercoat or metal prepping the inside of these beautiful
cars is a real shame. Since so many of them have fallen victim to water and
salt corrosion, especially in the North Eastern part of the US. As for your girl
friend…I figure if she’s going out on you and you think she worth
saving…cut out the bad part of your relationship before it destroys what you have
with her. Examine what the cause is for her to be seeing someone else, if
that’s the case. I’d ask her if she has anything she wants to talk to you about.
Be straight with her, maybe she’s just trying to get some of your attention.
It’s like that rust you found on your wheel arch, if you neglect it it’ll ruin
what may well be a great thing you have. But if it’s to late and she tells
you she wants out, hey, sometimes you have to cut out the rotten part of your
life, too! And believe me pretty soon you won’t even notice there had once
been a problem area. There are answers to everything IF you are willing to play
it smart. But stalking her is not only dumb it’s illegal.

It can be hard to understand the humor in something when it is in reference
to something several days old and no part of the original posting is quoted
to keep things in context. You may want to consider quoting a few lines of
any post you reply to. Remember that many of us get these postings via
email, not the forums…so we literally “see” things differently than forum
users do. The original postings, which ended up with your “taking the piss”
remark, were deleted from my mailbox days ago so I had no frame of
reference…I suspect other email users were in the same quandary.
I now understand what “taking the piss” means. I didn’t before, I suspect
many other Americans didn’t, either. It is not a reflection of our sense of
humor. We’re just not familiar with all the down under colloquialisms,
that’s all. It is not that your attempt at humor was subtle, it just
completely missed the mark.
If you want to impress us with how wonderful NZ humor is relative to USA
humor, I might suggest saying something genuinely humorous, offered in
proper context, and without NZ-specific slang.
