[Lumps!] Re: Will it Fit?

Finally after much effort I’ve found a Back seat in “good” condition Leather
ok and in the same color as the rest of my interior …a"generic" Tan. Only
thing is its out of a 1980 early Series III and my car is a !977-78 Series
II, Please tell me that they’re inter-changeable. Reupolstering mine is out
of the Question because I think the POs must have used the car to transport
400 lb kids or something because the frame and springs of my rear seat are
history-Gone! Has anyone out there ever put a 1980 rear seat in a 1977-78
XJ-6L Will I have to “modify” anything. Anxiously awaiting reply.

Albert:

Provided you’re happy with whatever differences there are in leather
pattern, texture or colour, it will fit. 2 screws for your seat bottom
under the leading edge, then 3 bolts under the seat back once you’ve
removed the bottom. All you do now, and be careful, is to raise the seat
back carefully as the springs will catch on the hooks holding the top part
of the seat back up.

Takes 10 minutes max to do the swap carefully. Congrats on finding a nice
seat.>Finally after much effort I’ve found a Back seat in “good” condition Leather

It most certainly will fit. If you want a degree of difficulty try a
different series.
SI and SII seats anchorage points are the same, all SIII similar, XJ40 on
similar.
Been there, done that.

Albert: the SIII seat will probably fit. That is the good news. By the way,
the colour is “biscuit”. The bad news is that the SIII seat has wider, and
fewer pleats. The SII seat has many narrow pleats. The 1980 seat will have
the same perforated leather as your SII, however (unperforated leather
[“smooth”] was introduced in 1983 on Jaguars, but had been used exclusively
on Daimlers before this. The “smooth” leather does not hide any
imperfections and therefore must be of the highest quality; the perforated
leather style was more forgiving). The SIII seat mounts simply by two screws
in the front. If your SII seat has the same mount, there should be no
problem.

Albert: The seat back is held on by two bolts at the bottom, and by clips
toward the top. Remove the seat bottom, then the two bolts, then lift UP to
disengage the clips.
