[Lumps!] Rear Hub Noise

Hi All,

Recently I took my XJ6 in for an oil change and lube at one of those 10
minute places. When I got it back I could hear noise coming from the rear
of the car that increases with speed. I’ve had a differential go bad on me
before and it doesn’t sound like that did. Could the rear hub bearings be
making the noise and is it possible that injecting grease into them somehow
caused them to come out of adjustment?

Thanks for your input.

Hi Bob;
Did they put it on a hoist? If so, I would check for bent or damaged
suspension/rear crossmember damage. Could be they lifted your kitty by a
sensitive part, and caused some misalignment, or worse. Sure hope not.
Good Luck

Hi Dave,

Yeah, they did put it up on a rack. I don’t remember if it was the drive-on
type or the kind that lifts by the frame. I’ve got my jag mechanic looking
at it now. He seems to think that the hubs may be out of adjustment. We’ll
see. Thanks for the heads up.

Bob -
I had a similar sound, and I panicked when I thought it was a wheel bearing.
Luckily, it turned out to be loose u-joint covers on the half-shafts. Mine
where held on with pipe clamps. Tightened 'em down, and the sound went away.
Good luck.
