[Lumps!] Red and White wire from alternator

Quick question. From the alternator plug, one red and one white. Does the
red to to 12+ and the white to the ignition, or the other way around?
I found that the P.O. tied all this wiring together for some reason. White,
red, and wire from battery and wire to ignition all crimped together at the
end of the pig tail of the alternator plug. Replaced alternator for laughs
and giggles, but not sure about routing of the wires from that pig tail. I
am being anal on all this, with new clips and heat shrink tubing, etc. As
one finds on these cars, there is about 3 splices on the wire that goes to
the switch. Figure that with painting brackets and proper neat wire, that I
am ahead of the game.

P.S. I will be home all day, please (if any of the Phoenix gang have a
chance), give me a call to brainstorm this a little. [623] 551]7887

My S1 car needs to be totally rewired -but, it was working
PERFECTLY when I took out the old engine.

But my alternator has a large black wire that goes to the firewall
post connection where the red battery wire is attached on the
passenger side.

But the other wire is Red and goes to a inline fuse that attaches
to the fan relay on the RF inside of the fender.

Guess this does not help you much? Sorry you are having so much
electrical trouble - did not notice until just now.–

Colleagues:
As you may have been reading, I have had a bear of a time with this new S1
that I got. Right now, am rewiring things on the engine side of the
firewall. P.O. (not Joe) had the 12v+ switched (white off alternator) and
the 12v+ direct (red off alternator) of the alternator wired together for
some reason. At least I presume that the one wire is a switched source.
Since the car is tore down to the point where I can not hook the battery up,
could someone physically direct me to a 12v+ switched source under the
bonnet? Preferably on the passenger side or center on the fire wall. Right
now, the wire that I am presuming might be a 12v+ switched source is all the
way across the engine compartment on the driver’s side fender. I don’t want
to trust that the P.O. actually had that right. It bothers me that they
tied the two alternator wires together for some reason. In fact, I am
concerned that the wire in question might run something else and that they
were using that connection as a source for that item. Who knows with
P.O.s.?

Smitty,

There should be a horn relay on the right fenderwall. How about that
for switched 12+ in the engine compartment?

Wish I knew more about the car or its PO’s but the kid I got it from
knew nothing about cars and it shows.

We all have our nightmare stories and situations with P.O.s. It seems that
the P.O.s on our Jags all seem to have head inserted very far up into a dark
space. Is that politically correct or not? I must be getting mellow in
my old age, huh Albert?

So with that said, for the record, I want it to be known that Joe
Abrahamson, the fine gentleman that I bought my 73 S1 from is not the P.O.
of record on my comments.

I fully agree with Joe when he states, “Wish I knew more about the car or
its PO’s but the kid I got it from knew nothing about cars and it shows.”
That is an understatement for sure. So with soldering iron in hand, heat
shrink tubing in pocket, meter near by, coffee & cigarettes ready, and lots
of cussing and mumbling under my breath … I go forward!

Is it possible that the same PO also owned my S1 and SII sometime
in the past?

Wiring seems to be the area most likely to be ‘‘screwed up’’ by
people (PO’s) with no clue.

I too wish I could obtain new harnesses for my S1…I have sorted
out the SII wiring already; so that thought has passed.

It does seem that you are lacking ‘‘celebratory beverages’’ to be
consumed when it all works again??–
