[Lumps!] S1 with LT1 is running well now - lots of progress

My ‘‘new’’ S1 with LT1/700R is finally acting like a civilized Cat.
She is purring softly now. The major problems were a large exhaust
leak in front of the 02 sensor and a non functional alternator.
Lack of juice to fire the plugs and the 02 signal from the exhaust
leak caused it to run very poorly.

The alternator has been fixed - bad regulator inside and the wire
to the field was broken - fried probably when hooked up to original
Firebird and poorly repaired. With a new 10 gauge wire, it now
charges well and provides enough voltage to make the car run
properly.

The header has been re-welded and painted with high temp paint and
installed with a new copper gasket (they are Ceramic coated) to
cover the new welds and the collector gasket changed and properly
tightened and the headers re-tightened after cooling down.

It starts now, idles and does not smoke out of the side with the
exhaust leak. The charge rate at idle is fine now and just a few
more things to fix before becoming a daily driver with high mpg.

I want to do the AC and heating mods and fresh air mods and then
install the new radiator, trans cooler and really test the car on
the road. So far I only have about 50 miles on the car because of
the prior poor running condition.

Thanks to Andrew of Jaguar Specialties especially and all the
others that have provided help with this ‘‘new to me’’ generation of
SBC engine with a computer! Slowly all the problems are being
resolved with this 37 year old vehicle.–

Continuing the repairs this weekend:

Fixed the passenger front floor seam that had been ‘‘split open’’.
Used 6/32 screws and washers with nuts to pull the floor back
together. When no light was leaking through the seam, it was sealed
up inside and out with undercoating.

Three more wires to hook up and the wiring is completed. I sealed
up the holes made for the wiring looms.

Just waiting now for the new Vintage Air heating servo parts to
arrive and I can finish up the inside AC and fresh air mods and re-
install the new Koss AM/FM/Tape radio. I still have the (6) CD
player to mount in the boot.

Will drive the car for a week or so daily and then change out the
radiator for the new LT1 type, install the stock AC parts and the
B&M trans cooler.

When all is done, the modified throttle body will be removed for
the stock one and I will replace the brackets for the accelerator
and TV cable to be stock again.

The exhaust leaks are gone!–
