[Lumps!] SIII Windshield wipers

A sad secret…Ever since its conversion, my xj6’s windshield wipers
haven’t worked. They worked fine before. It’s not really a problem since I
don’t like to take the car out when it’s raining, but it can be a little
maddening if it starts raining while you’re out…I’ve replaced fuses, but
they burnout immediately with no movement of the wipers. That means a
short, right? But where do I look. Under neath my steering wheel is a
collection of wires so dense that fate herself would have trouble dealing
with the strands. Should I focus on the wiper motor itself, near the
battery? What gives?

A wiring problem would be my first guess, too. But…

What if there was a mechanical problem with the wipers (binding or jammed
somehow) which creates a very large load on the electrics?

That might be an easier place to start looking.

Perhaps undo the linkage/cable from the motor and see what happens ?

Just a thought,

Try simple elimination:

Disconnect whipermotor. If the fuse still blows when you activate the
whipers, it’s in the wiring or the whiper relay. If not, the motor is
at foult. If it’s not the motor, disconnect the relay and check
again. This way you reduce the area in which to search for the foult
in easy and traceble steps. If it’s the motor, the binding as
suggested by Doug Dwyer in a previous mail could be possible, but
I’ve seen more burned out motors then stuck ones.

Good luck!

P.S. Check the fuse rating. Some people waste dozens of 1 amp fuses
in a 10 amp application. Yes, I was one of them, a long time ago…>A sad secret…Ever since its conversion, my xj6’s windshield wipers
