[Lumps!] TR6 TBI Conversion project

Hi guys,

I know this isn’t a jaguar topic but I haven’t posted in a
while and I thought you all might be interested in my latest
project, which is to convert a TR6 (single barrel carb) to a
highly efficient TBI style (but using modern injectors) for
added MPG. There is a kit on the market already but it’s price
tag is crazy for what you get. I’m going to try to get the
total cost down to the sub-300 level.

My plan is to make a 2 part adapter plate from cast resin which
would seat two modern injectors (the ones from Ford 5.0s, or
the chevy 5.7’s like we use). Another fellow on the triumph
forum had success in mounting his injectors from the bottom
aiming up towards the throttle plates, and was well hidden but
required an irreversible modification to the carb body. I’m
trying to mimic the existing kit only instead of a single TBI
injector for each carb (with their crummy spray pattern and
inefficiencies) to a dual injector bank fire.–

Tyler:

First, good to hear from you.
The lump section needs whatever it can get!!!

As you are now working on the Triumph,
do we conclude that the Jaguar Is
finished (?), Whatever that means?

This month’s Auto Restorer has an interesting
article on a TRS, describing it’s
life from way back.

In about the early sixties, a
small snout TR2 spent some time in my garage.

It had a ‘‘pranged’’ nose. I got
it straighter than it was but
not quite there. It ran very well.
Red. Noisy, oh, lots noisy pipes.
Fun and red.

As to your much more sophisticated
TR6. Sounds like fun. But, injector
location is but a small part.
Management??? After market or
adaptation of an existing ‘‘factory’’
version. Similar CC’s etc???

Tyler,
That’s awesome! Throttle body injection conversion kits are
all the rage right now for V8’s. Roger just installed one
in his XJ6 V8 and a friend of mine if putting one in his 72
Chevy C20 PU with a small block. Fast, FiTech…But all
are targeting 4 barrel carb replacement. Does anyone know
of a 2 barrel version?–

So the Jaguar is as done as I’m going to get it for now - I
still gotta get it painted, the interior redone, the trans
tunnel welded up and I’d like to clean up the engine bay. There
are also legacy issues that remain from when I was too
exuberant all those years ago and my amateur/stopgap approaches
to a few things now really stick out like a sore thumb. The
Lumps forum was indispensable - I still look at your wiring
schematic Bob - that thing was so helpful!

As for the TR6 controller, I’m using a Corvair PCM with some
modified tables. The conversion kit needs:

Fuel Pump, pressure regulator, IAC, TPS, MAP, Temp control
sensor. The knowledge I learned from the XJ6 will go along way
in putting it together.

The other fellow I mentioned, Scott Abbot did this same
conversion in many many LBC’s and was successful. He’s annoyed
at the status of the market for these conversions - since there
isn’t much competition, the prices are artificially high (you
should see the cost for the 5 speed Celica trans conversion kit
for the TR6 - over 2000, not including the trans!)

The TR6 is a neat little car and a welcome breath of fresh air
in terms of ease and not much trouble shooting needed (at least
in terms of putting it together). The engine bay is roomy and
components are primitive (in a good way). An added bonus, since
the car is from 1972, no smog! Take that California!

Bob, here is a 2bbl TBI kit, although at 200 bucks I think you
could make your own:

You could also try making it from cast resin - it’s fun to make
your own plastic stuff!–

Interesting stuff.

Didn’t know GM ever got around
to FI for Corvairs! Must be
an after market thing.

I do recall reading of a fellow
a couple of towns away that
adapted one own for his
Corvair. The four carb version
would be a great base. From a Volvo???

OOOOH, the Jetronic!!!

On an inline, the intake just
seem to be asking to be drilled
for injectors.

As to that V6 injection to
carb adapter. Odd, but there are
special needs. Race rules for example.

I wonder if he mills them manually
or has some version CNC.

My son has three CNC’s. One old one
with old controls. A slightly younger
one with his adaptation of a programmable
control. a new and smaller one with
modern CNC.

Just learned. Computer numerical
control!!!

Really slick. He cuts FI and
carb spacers. some in plastic
and some in alloy.

The CNC’s. just select tools,
and cut in x, y and Z axis.

A form of robotics???
