[Lumps!] Upgrade Steering Rack

Hi All-
In considering a rebuilt steering rack is there any reason not to
upgrade to a later rack? I have a 80 xj6 -why not use a 87 steering
rack with 87 track rod ends?
Thanks-

Assuming fit/form/function are the same, why not indeed, especially if no major
modifications are required. Possible issues would be different type or size
hose fittings and height of the pinion housing (so-called short or tall tower),
although (AFAIK) all EFI cars have the short tower rack.

Another downside could be the parts store insisting on an identical ‘core’
being turned in for the rebuilt you are buying. That would be highly dependent
on the intelligence level of the person behind the cash register/computer
terminal. Many of them (IMO) would be completely unable to do their job w/o
assistance of the computerized database. Quite often I stump them by walking
in with THEIR (the particular auto parts store that is) part number and telling
them that is what I want. Then they insist on “Make/Model/Year” application
data for the part. If it is a Chevy engine part, they can’t understand why the
part number won’t cross for “Jaguar/XJ-S/1979”. More than once, I have been
warned by the ‘trained monkey’ clerk that the part won’t fit/won’t work in my
car and I should leave the wrench turning to a man…

Most of them are still living, some are still intact… None of them are
working in stores I will return to.

Thanks-

All of the racks after 77/78 for XJ6, and all XJS take
the same PS fittings- no changes…=====
