[Lumps!] Wheel Styles, wheels, rims, kent, turbo, starfish, wires, pepperpots, aero, kiwi

Hi Listers,
In the past there have been many posts with confusion ,
by newbies, etc. , of the names of the styles of wheels.
So I thought I’d add a list with the photos, and nomenclature.
Thanks to Dr.G. for his time, authenticating the page.

Charlie, thanks, I was totally confused and thought those Brits strange to
have such big holes in their pepper shakers (Kents). Now I know a Pepperpot
from a Kent. Do you want a pic to scan of the S1 and S2 Turbo wheels (what
you call Series 1) with hubcap? Also can do one of the Dayton wires.

Charlie, Gregory

I am sorry to say that there are some glaring mistakes in your authenticated
list/pictures of wheels

In order of your list:-

Kents: - The Kent alloy wheel derived it’s name (not surprisingly) from the
company who made them (Kent Alloy Wheels) as opposed to the specific name
given to the unique style which was ‘Spoked Alloy’, which is how Jaguar marketed
these wheels. I am not sure of the colour rendition of the photo, as the wheel nut
segments have a tinge of green about them and it would normally be dark grey.
The Kent’s also had two other finishes that were supplied as well as
numerous minor alterations over it’s effective lifespan.

Pepperpots: - This also is not the original name given to these wheels by Jaguar. The
correct name is ‘Ogle Perforated’ derived from the style of the wheel. The name
Pepperpots became the colloquial term for obvious reasons and like most
colloquial terms it became the standard form of label for this wheel by word of
mouth.

Series I Chromed Rim : - This wheel is simply listed by Jaguar as ‘Black and Chromium’
and was available from Series I to Series III.

Starfish: - Now this wheel in the picture never was or shall be known as ‘Starfish’!
The wheel depicted is known as ‘Five Spoke’ available in silver or chrome finish.
mainly fitted to later XJS cars and the XJ40.

The true Starfish alloy is the wheel that was introduced with the XJ-S HE model in
1981 and stayed with the V12 XJ-S for many years as standard.

Turbos: - This wheel also is not listed by Jaguar as ‘Turbo’, what it’s name really is
is ‘Teardrop’ consisting of 20 holes around it’s circumference in the shape of ‘Teardrops’!
The wheel can be had with exposed wheel nuts as in your photograph or with covered
wheel nuts. These wheels were originally brought out with the XJ40 in metric size and were
later re-introduced in the much needed standard size.

In due course I expect that this pictorial list will expand and to that end I list below some
other popular Jaguar wheels which should be included.

Sports Alloy - Starfish - Press Spoke - 20 Spoke - Dimple - Turbine - Cosmic - Supersport -
Starburst - Crown - XJR Sports - Speedline.

Steve: lMy contribution to the wheel list was to provide the name for the
last two wheels only, which according to your critique are correctly named.
But I should tell you that the S1/2 chromed wheel was officially known in
Canada as the “Turbo-Chromed wheel” (this is taken directly from the 1979
Jaguar Canada brochure; this same brochure also lists the XJ12L saloon and
the
XJ-S (sic) as having the “Kent Magnesium Alloy”. The Series 3 brochures
list the wheels differently, the Kent being listed simply as “Vented alloy
wheels”; an additional section lists the additional Sovereign specs where
the pepperpots are described as “Perforated alloy wheels”.
So it seems that officially the term “Kent” WAS used, at least on this side
of the pond.

Thanks Steve,
I was mainly interested in the styles, not colors or finishes, just to give newbies,(and others) a base from which to start.

However, you have made a valid point, and I as a layman,

So where can I get the photos that you suggest be added?
I would certainly like to add any and all Jag wheels to the list.

It appears to me that Jaguar has several different names depending on the
culture in which the Jag is being produced for. To a degree, all of the
names that everyone that has commented on is correct, again depending upon

1979

Jaguar Canada brochure; this same brochure also lists the XJ12L saloon
and

the
XJ-S (sic) as having the “Kent Magnesium Alloy”. The Series 3 brochures
list the wheels differently, the Kent being listed simply as "Vented
alloy

wheels"; an additional section lists the additional Sovereign specs
where

the pepperpots are described as “Perforated alloy wheels”.
So it seems that officially the term “Kent” WAS used, at least on this
side

of the pond.

Charlie, Gregory

I am sorry to say that there are some glaring mistakes in your
authenticated
list/pictures of wheels

In order of your list:-

Kents: - The Kent alloy wheel derived it’s name (not surprisingly)
from

the

company who made them (Kent Alloy Wheels) as opposed to the specific
name

given to the unique style which was ‘Spoked Alloy’, which is how
Jaguar

marketed

these wheels. I am not sure of the colour rendition of the photo, as
the

wheel nut

segments have a tinge of green about them and it would normally be
dark

grey.

The Kent’s also had two other finishes that were supplied as well as
numerous minor alterations over it’s effective lifespan.

Pepperpots: - This also is not the original name given to these wheels
by

Jaguar. The

correct name is ‘Ogle Perforated’ derived from the style of the wheel.
The

name

Pepperpots became the colloquial term for obvious reasons and like
most

colloquial terms it became the standard form of label for this wheel
by

word of

mouth.

Series I Chromed Rim : - This wheel is simply listed by Jaguar as
'Black

and Chromium’

and was available from Series I to Series III.

Starfish: - Now this wheel in the picture never was or shall be known
as

‘Starfish’!

The wheel depicted is known as ‘Five Spoke’ available in silver or
chrome

finish.

mainly fitted to later XJS cars and the XJ40.

The true Starfish alloy is the wheel that was introduced with the XJ-S
HE

model in

1981 and stayed with the V12 XJ-S for many years as standard.

Turbos: - This wheel also is not listed by Jaguar as ‘Turbo’, what
it’s

name really is

is ‘Teardrop’ consisting of 20 holes around it’s circumference in the
shape of ‘Teardrops’!
The wheel can be had with exposed wheel nuts as in your photograph or
with

covered

wheel nuts. These wheels were originally brought out with the XJ40 in
metric size and were
later re-introduced in the much needed standard size.

In due course I expect that this pictorial list will expand and to
that

end I list below some

other popular Jaguar wheels which should be included.

Sports Alloy - Starfish - Press Spoke - 20 Spoke - Dimple - Turbine -
Cosmic - Supersport -
Starburst - Crown - XJR Sports - Speedline.

I was mainly interested in the styles, not colors or finishes, just to give newbies,(and others) a base

However, you have made a valid point, and I as a layman,

Brian

Jaguar do not have several names for these wheels. I have already stated that two of the wheels pictured
have the wrong names altogether whilst others are given colloquial names because people naturally
relate the style of the wheel to something that is familiar to them whilst ignorant of the correct name at
that time. Say it enough times and it becomes the norm. That is why women in the UK and elsewhere for all
I know say that they are going to “Hoover the lounge”. Hoover is a brand name but it has become so enshrined
with the task of vacuuming the carpet, that it has become a generic term. A similar thing happened to the
original
TWR - later XJRS wheels when people called them ‘coke bottle tops’ when the correct name is ‘Speedline’.
The only difference here was that the Speedlines were not as common as the Spoked Alloys or the Ogle
Perforated Alloys and so did not get saddled with another name for posterity.

I stated earlier that the 1977 XJ-S brochure for the USA depicting a red Pre HE XJ-S, states that the wheels
are “Cast Aluminium Alloys”. This is a USA brochure 1977. The car had been out since 1975 and had been
shown with “Spoked Alloys”. Remember that this was Jaguar’s first alloy wheel offering ever. I have Motor
Show reports in which pundits say the car is fitted with Kent alloy wheels. Well of course they are because
that is the company who made them, but the designated name is Spoked Alloys!

As I have mentioned before, the UK models are the purest form of the marque to which alterations are made for
legislation and market tastes around the world. It would be easier to get to know the original intended
vehicle
in full and then add or subtract as required for your own market domain. It would become less confusing.

It appears to me that Jaguar has several different names depending on the
culture in which the Jag is being produced for. To a degree, all of the
names that everyone that has commented on is correct, again depending upon
where you are from.

Jaguar listed the Black and Chromium wheels by that name from Series I
to Series III as a fitting for the Daimler Vanden Plas model, and is
evident
in their microfiche/literature since the Series I period through 1986
editions
and beyond, so they have not wavered in their name description. My 1977 US
catalogue lists the Spoked Alloy Wheels (Kent) simply as fitted with Cast
Aluminium Wheels!

Apart from knowing the correct names of all these wheels, there is Jaguar
literature in abundance to support the information given as Jaguars
terminology
for these wheels.

In the past there have been many posts with confusion ,
by newbies, etc. , of the names of the styles of wheels.
So I thought I’d add a list with the photos, and nomenclature.
Thanks to Dr.G. for his time, authenticating the page.

The credit for the wheel posting goes entirely to Charlie. I did nothing but
confirm the name of the two last wheels. Later style wheels can be fitted
tothe S3 car but the principal difficulty is that they do not give
sufficient clearance for the centre part, and may require a spacer. This in
turn produces other problems because the wheel no longer sits where it
should and the geometry is thrown off. Not insurmountable, but it is most
often not a straight swap.

Charlie,

I think I speak for everyone for saying this, but thank you and the good
Doc
for compiling this list for others to use for reference. My question is
this. Of the rims that were exampled ( with exception to the Kent, and
Pepperpot style rims ), which are available to fit a 1982 Series 3 sedan?

Well, Steve, your argument is with Jaguar Canada, not with me. I was simply
quoting from their literature. Again, it is obvious that different
procedures, nomenclature, etc. are used by Jaguar in different markets.
Perhaps we could ask again that questioners identify the market they
are concerned with, and that they identify their cars fully.
For example: saying: “1986 Jaguar VDP” means a TOTALLY different thing
to a Canadian (for whom this is a V12 car) and to an American (for whom this
is a six cylinder car) and to a UK resident (for whom this car does not
exist).

Steve: lMy contribution to the wheel list was to provide the name for
the

last two wheels only, which according to your critique are correctly
named.

But I should tell you that the S1/2 chromed wheel was officially known
in

Canada as the “Turbo-Chromed wheel” (this is taken directly from the

Snip, snip

Well, Steve, your argument is with Jaguar Canada, not with me.

Me argue, you must be confusing me with someone else. :>)

For example: saying: "1986 Jaguar VDP" means a TOTALLY different thing

to a Canadian (for whom this is a V12 car) and to an American (for whom this
is a six cylinder car) and to a UK resident (for whom this car does not
exist).

Well not exactly, the common denominator is 1986 Jaguar. They were made and went all
over the world. So we start with a 1986 Jaguar and add the VDP. In the country of origin (UK)
the VDP appellation had ceased to be used as Jaguar were no longer entitled to use it in the UK.
It was also only used in relation to Daimler cars. By adding the VDP to the Jaguar brand it must
therefore be a car going out of the country, which we know is marketed in the USA/Canada market.

The major differences between the two exported car markets of a 1986 model is the engine size of 6 and
12 cylinders respectively. Once that has been established it only remains to realize that for the most part
the UK Daimler spec has been transferred into the Jaguar VDP whilst the car retained the Jaguar marking
and badges.

If you start at the beginning and add and delete accordingly, less confusion reigns. Of course the car exists,
it is just that it has been molested a little to create something else for a different market.

If it was not for unilateral legislation in various countries, everyone would get the UK model range with
various options available dependant upon the market. As the manufactures are forced into all manner of
various legislation and protectionism in some countries it gives rise to ‘a bit of a dogs breakfast’ being
created much more easily.----- Original Message -----
