[Lumps!] window problems, electrical

hi listers & lumpers,
a long time since i posted on this page, though i still keep reading
all your progress with interest.
One of my back windows keeps burning out the motor &/or wiring,
getting to be a habit, all other windows work fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas, maybe i should fit some
sort of relay or cut out?
I have already replaced a motor & the wiring before, i am hoping it
is not a problem in the harness that somehow snakes through the door
pillar.
TIA for any advice
cheers,

Bruce, two things come quickly to mind:

A mechanical problem with the window mechanism which is causing the window
to bind or drag, thus overheating the motor or a poor ground creating
excessive resistance.

Does the wiring appear overheated (insulation sorta lumpy) ? Are the
connectors at the motor burned or melted ? Any other symptoms prior to
failure ?

Incidentally the system already has a couple of circuit breakers so there
should be no need to modify the circuit.

How many times have you replaced the motor ? If just once maybe you got a
bum motor…it can happen every now and then.

Hope this helps a little.

Bruce,
Each motor, has a separate ground, connected via the switch’s connector.
The motor connections are flip flopped within the window switch,
to make the window rise and fall. If the motor keeps burning out,
either there is too much of a load on the glass (friction in the track, or
mechanism),
the track needs adjustment, ( again causing too much load),
or the motor is not properly being grounded, causing increased resistance,
lower voltage,
and resulting in high motor temps.
Check the offending switch’s ground connection first.
It is located under the center console, via a screw to the tunnel.
There are multiple ground connections there, and one could be corroded,
to a point where it won’t work, yet the others will.
Be sure, all is clean and tight.

Hope this helps ya!

hi listers,
well you guys still are The One, no question about it.
I ask my first question in over a year & get 2 perfect answers straight away.
…thanx muchly
The windows tracks freely, so it must be the ground connection.
The back left window didn’t work when i bought the car…the PO said
a faulty switch (I was naive in those days) but when i removed the
console i saw a small fire had occurred & most switch wiring was
gone. So obviously it was yet another problem he had in the too hard
basket.

I am on my second motor & set of wiring…
currently (no pun intended) the wiring is lumpy & burnt, i haven’t
taken the motor out till i heard from you guys, hope its not burnt
inside, i will try & sort out the ground connection…car electrics
are the eighth wonder of the world to me.

cheers,
bruce
