Did you actually check/clean the hot air pick-up on your AED, Paul…?
It’s a regular maintenance item, and a common cause of AED running rich. The hot air from the exhaust manifold heats the air as the engine warms up, causing the AED to gradually close the air flow through it - the air drawing fuel through the AED to the engine…
Of course, the AED is somewhat intricate - in automatic operation there are a few things that can go wrong…
The AED, like most automatic chokes, uses engine heat-up to shut off choke function. Without proper choke, manual or automatic - the engine will misbehave during warm-up…
Hi Frank, after about 23 years off the road for one reason or another (probably involving me) I had two leaking exhaust valves. I had a specialist refurbish the head about 3 years ago. At that point with the exhaust manifolds off I thoroughly cleaned the “air circuit” which is, of course, normally inaccessible. The car has done about 6,000 miles since. I think the issue is internal because the problem came on suddenly. When I’m more favourably disposed I will pull the AED down and investigate. Nothing that I have done can’t be reversed. Thanks for your thoughts and interest! Paul.
The point regarding the hot air pick up is correct, but with the cam/manual conversion the bi-metallic temperature control for the AED is redundant and therefore the hot air pick up from the exhaust manifold is also unnecessary. To avoid the sort of issues Frank outlines I removed my pick up entirely and fitted a short pipe (about 1" long) with gauze filter immediately under the AED. It works very well - and is really easy to access for maintenance if required.
I assume you have checked that the flooding is not simply a faulty fuel inlet valve on the AED?
I have two. The original and one my wife bought on the instructions of her Coventry trained englishman mechanic in about 1990 from Henlys in London. It’s a very smart device but it’s been causing enough grief of late to prompt me to try something different as others have. Paul.
I have a mod on my 74 series 2 which operates on both carbs. This mod was done by a previous owner but I cannot for the life of me post the pictures to show what was done! So frustrating!
Interested when you work out the upload system. I find it easiest on my Android phone. Pressing the upload button gives you the option to take a picture then and there. FWIW. Paul.
I think I’ve figured out how to add a photo (with some help) so here goes, this is the mod on my series 2 when the AED was removed by a previous owner. Hope that this works!
Thanks Paul, pressed ‘upload’ as you suggested and it gave me the option to add a file from my device, from there it was simple. These things are simple when you know how!
That part marked in red ( part no?) can be created by modifying the existing part if you have access to a welder. I made a similar setup for my S1 in the early 1980’s by welding a little tab on it to fit a bent rod attached to rod system. Worked absolutely perfectly, always started immediately.
