Manual heat/AC setting

And the S1 cars did not have factory fitted AC, David…

I sure second that, Doug - to condemn a system that is not allowed to perform to specs because of mendable faults is not cricket…

Originally, the AC amplifier used the temp control, in-car temp sensor and the ambient air sensor input to put the servo in a position to rapidly reach and then maintain set cabin temp.

With manual servo control the driver must use judgement to set the servo to the preferred position. But the driver is still bound by the logic of the system - to rapidly cool or heat the cabin, the driver must still set the servo to respective extreme positions. And if higher or lower temps is wanted, the servo must be reset accordingly.

With faults present, there is limit to what can be done with servo resetting - without functioning AC there can be no cooling below ambient temps. And with the engine cold, or a failed water valve/heater matrix, there is no way of getting heat…

They certainly did, Frank!

It’s also extensively described in the manuals. The earliest cars might have had the evaporator in the boot.
