Mark IV 3.5 stuck starter

My starter stopped, so I removed 3 bolts and the wiring. The starter won’t come off. A few taps did not help. Do I need a bigger hammer?

You might be able to un-jam it where its nose pokes through the bell housing. Lever between the bell housing and the end of the starter pinnion.

Hello Peter,

I took your advice…and also looked at a spare starter I have. I found
that if I rotate the shaft the gear moves up and down the shaft. With
that in mind I used a pipe wrench to turn the shaft and the gears
disengaged, releasing the starer motor.

Thanks for your assistance.

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Some starters have a squared end of the shaft protruding from the other end but I couldn’t remember whether that is the case in the MkIV hence the suggestion of attacking the other end.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted. I guess another way to free it might be to engage top gear and push the car back or forwards a little or try the starting handle (although it might need the engine rotated backwards.)

Regards,

Peter
