Mark X Torquatrol unit

Any suggestions on where to get a replacement unit, C23693? Tried all the usual suppliers with no luck. Will one from any other Jag model fit?

these units CAN be rebuilt by specialists, the repair process is similar to AT Torque Convertors

The unit is identical to a 420G/420/ SI XJ6

The original part is NLA

Unfortunately used units from above models are often worn out, I salvage them mainly off S1 XJ

a later S2/3 XJ unit can be modified to fit (just)

early MKX had solid mount fan, (a plate can be made)

2 X 12" electric fans can be fitted, they need to be slim profile

Before we drove our XJ6 Sydney to Hobart return at Christmas I replaced our original unit with a Davies Craig aftermarket. They have a good website to assist (from memory) . It cost about AUD$140 and has been great. As Tony suggests they can be refurbished and are regularly done for Toyota fourbys etc. I intend to have my original refurbished - but its on the longer list. FWIW Paul

The MKX (and 420G) have a ridiculously small gap between the WP snout and radiator ~67mm

This is slightly less than an XJ ( I am fairly sure) and makes using a single, or even some doubles tricky

The cost to OH a Torqutrol was quoted me as ~A$280

I have noticed mine is silent for about 2secs on startup, then makes noise (a good sign)
a good one should spin about once with a hard spin

Not sure the S1 XJ6 unit is the same as the part numbers are different. However, my Mark X does have factory A/C so the part number I have for it may not be correct as the parts manual came out before A/C was available. As I’m in the US, sending the unit overseas for refurbishment is not a good option. Need to locate a local shop - what sort of shop will OH the unit?

Maybe an enquiry to a Toyota fourby forum might yield results? I understand it’s common practice here - would expect similar on your side of the rock. Paul

On my 1967 420 ( compact sedan ) with the 4.2, since I was not able to find a replacement I took off the fan/clutch and using a spacer replaced the 4.5 pound iron fan with a 1/2 pound aluminum flex fan. As the old fan/clutch was not working that well it is hard to compare old to new but the flex fan is working quite well. Pete

the part nums are different, but its the same…does not matter, both parts NLA

maybe the post '71 S1 XJ may have later unit, which looks similar, but is detectably different

it may be difficult to find someone, as my source had a retired engineer…likewise another done this way, process is the same as torque convertor…split unit in lathe, replace internal bush & fluid, braze up

if ur in USA, there is a lister mr David Bodger? who wrecks XJ

I nearly forgot…nearly ALL large trucks use a viscous fan, (which speaks to their effectiveness and reliabilty)

So between Toyotas and large trucks, you would expect someone, although the more modern units work in a slightly different way to the older type

Thanks for all your suggestions. I’ll see if I can locate a company to do the OH.
