I managed to locate an old non-working original Philips radio (circa 1970) to fit an E-type and sent it to Joe for conversion. He retains all the original front and controls so it looks period. $425 for the conversion. A pair of these slimline speakers from Retrosound fit perfectly and give the needed wattage.
Jaguar Buddies,
So Iâve decided to have Joe do a radio for me. All I need is a correct radio for my car.
Are there any âoriginality expertsâ out there who can tell me if this Blaupunkt COULD have been original to a 1964 OTS? Or theoretically, would this be incorrect? (european radio, too early too late etc.) My understanding is several radios might be correct for any given year as the dealers generally installed them stateside. Functionality really doesnât matter since itâs gonna get rebuilt with modern electronics, but I donât want it glaring saying âI donât belong here.â

If this is âwrongâ, is there a reliable list of available radios for the e types year to year? Iâve found a few, but some of the info is a little confusingâŚ
Thanks for your help in advance?
Andrew
If this page is reliable it looks like they fitted Blaupunkt radios at least back in '66. I know they also fitted similar looking Motorola radios in the early days. I have two of Philip Porterâs books (Original E-type and Definitive history) and he says nothing about radios.
Sometimes a Motorola Playmate AM, Blaupunkt FM-AM -SW Frankfort, Radiomobile, Occasionally a Becker.
Check the e type uk site for a pretty extensive review of e type radios.
I used to have a FHC built in 1965. I remember the buttons in it were marked AM SW FM. I am pretty sure it was a Blaupunkt. You might go to xkedata.com and browse thru the photos of '64âs to see if give you a better idea what would be correct looking for your year and perhaps delivery country. I regularly have gone there and browsed the other cars built around the same time as mine to see how they compare. Just a thought.

Andrew,
Though Blaupunkt radios appear to have been fitted to E-Types (as you say, by US dealers), the labeling of the buttons on the radio you provided a link to (L, M, K, U, U) clearly point to it being the European variant. There are photos of Blaupunkt radios in Haddock & Millers E-Type Originality Guide, but the buttons use the US terminology of AM, S, FM.

Excellent web site to find details on car Blaupunkt radios etcâŚsee below.
In particular, the Blaupunkt Franfurt radio, year 1969 supports FM (UK radios only supported MW and LW at the time ) and with a simple din plug to 3.5mm headphone plugâŚconnects your phone /mp3 device.
