Mk IV Heater recovery

I am going to attempt to revive a sad heater unit for a MK IV. Does anyone have, or has a contact for, heater unit parts? I need a bottom cover with doors, a top cover with demister outlet, and the side clips and associated spacers. In other words everything except the core and the motor to suit a demister style. The Clayton manufacturer/supplier in the UK does not market these parts and a new unit for some $700 is just stretching the budget too far.

Just an update. I managed to get all the individual parts from a supplier who specialises in Landrover parts. A very pleasant surprise.

The only query I have is with confirming the body colour. I have seen grey and black used in a variety of different cars. Can anyone confirm the colour for the Mk IV please? And if there was any production date change in colour.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Peter

Hi Peter,

I believe it’s grey.

Thanks Peter, I’ll look for a suitable grey.

Hi Peter,

I am told by a very reliable and very well informed MKIV specialist that they were painted by Jaguar to match the interior colour.

Tim

Hi Tim,

Do you think the factory masked the Clayton label and knobs or removed and refitted them after spraying?

Peter

Hi Peter,

Yes, I do, and I have been told that is certainly the case for MKIV’s. I believe that the MKV was simply light grey. I’d be keen to know if someone has access to an unrestored MKIV and what colour the Clayton heater is?

Cheers,

The decision for that must have been taken when the boss was away.

Thanks Tim, that’s very interesting. I can imagine it would have been a simple task for the factory to receive the heaters in split packs of covers and the rest. Then lining up the covers in batches to paint in red, blue, brown, etc.

Here is the cover I have and the original light grey is visible under the vent door.

The other is the replacement cover for another heater, in a much darker grey. Note the handles are not replicas and the label is a crude adhesive type. However, the original type is available, as shown, with drive pins.

No photo’s came through, Peter.

There seems to be a bit of contention about painted interior colour or not? It looks good in the Suede Green but this red one is a bit loud!

Tim

Here it is. For some reason I could not attach a file yesterday. Please view in conjunction with my story. I will have to muse over whether to do a trim-matching colour or adopt a factory generic. I have a red and a brown to consider.

Is such a Heating Unit standard equipment for the Mark IV 1948 LHD DHC? Was it optional? Was this applied regardless of the type of body?

It was standard equipment in the 6 cylinder cars and the Special Equipment version of the 4 cylinder.

Peter

Thanks a lot Peter for your prompt reaction.
