I installed a Nippon Denso compact starter about 10 years ago which has just failed (only spins-no engagement). I think I installed this when the engine was out.
Can I remove the starter from underneath the car rather than taking off the carburetors for access from above?
I have removed starter from above without removing carbs. I juggled it forward under carbs and up and away from where distributor is. I think it required clearing some wires and pipes away/side and removal of distributor cap and wires. But nothing to carbs. It wasn’t fun, starter is heavy to juggle under carbs, but possible.

Thank you both for confirming the starter removal. At 75 am getting too darn old for this.
We have a small garage down the street. I think I’ll get a new starter put the Jag up on the lift and have them install it.
