[modern] 1991 XJ40 brake light out....simple question. / inaccurate gas guage

Hi-
so, my brake light isn’t working (drivers side). but there isn’t any bulb
failure light appearing. anyone have any ideas?

second, my gas guage is a but nutty. it never fills up past 3/4 mark, and it
can fluctuate between 1/4 of a tank at any given point. today, with 1/2 a
tank, the “low gas” warning light appeared. bah!

anyone have any tips?

thanks all!

That’s a little strange. You should get a BFM warning. Is it possible the
BFM signal wire has been disconnected? It’s a pink wire with a red stripe
assuming driver’s side is on the left.

Are both brake light bulbs out?

Has a PO disarmed the Bulb Failure Module by any chance Chris? It should
certainly warn of the bulb failure.

Check to see if the pink wire with a slate stripe has been cut. The module
is behind the side carpeting on the driver’s side of the boot. There’s one
on the other side too that may also have been disarmed.

It sounds like your fuel gauge sender is flaky. I believe you have to drop
the tank to get to it. There is an off chance that there is a connector
problem that can be fixed by cleaning the contacts, but it’s less likely
since the connector is inside the car. It is RS22, pin 9 with a black wire
with white stripe and is located in the right A post under the dash panel
(LHD car). The connector is 36 way and is black.

Before risking life and limb messing with the gas tank, I believe I would
hook up a voltmeter in the car to monitor the voltage on pin 9, and see if
it jumps around the same way the gauge does.
