The seat memory for the driver’s seat has recently decided that it will
not reset the longitudinal position of the seat (forward and backward
movement) to the memorized position when the memory (1) button is
pressed. All other seat movements (and the steering wheel/mirrors)
respond.
The motors are OK since the seat can be adjusted forward and backwards
manually.
I searched the archives and found one other member who had an identical
problem. Unfortunately, the Email address was invalid so I couldn’t
follow it up.
Grateful for any pointers please.

Its either
-
Potentiometer and/or wiring
-
Controller
I paid to have mine fixed. The dealer charges USD$160 per pot.
If you are mechanically inclined take the seat apart and remove
the potentiometer and clean the pot with TV Tuner Cleaner available
at Radio Shack. Reassemble and see if the memory is fixed.
From how it was described to me the seat memory controller loses its
mind if one or more of the potentiometers goes “offline”. In your case,
most of the functionality works so its reasonable to assume that the
controller is ok. My seat memory was totally non-functional including the
mirrors.
Cheers
Brian

I had a similar problem with our 97 XJ6L about a year back. It was the seat
memory potentiometers. In my case the car was still under warranty. There
have been some discussions over the last couple of weeks on this. Brett
indicates that WD-40 may be a possible fix for these. He indicates that
you might be able to spray them without removal from the car. Given the
cost of the parts, I would think it is worth a try. I know the seat bottom
is easy to remove on our 89 XJ6 to give access to the power seat components.
I am have not tried this on the later body style.
