[modern] A poor weekend's work

Well I finished the water pump job. Brett says it’s easy, but then he
rebuilds his differential every couple of months just to keep his hand in

Turned the key - engine would not budge.

When I removed a water pump bolt that went through a bracket above the
pump, a spacer dropped out. When I put it all back together, I realized
there should be two spacers. Absolutely no sign of the other. I thought
someone previously had been too lazy to put it in, so I made up a
substitute with nuts and washers.

As John Wayne used to say - "Life is tough. It’s even tougher if you’re
stupid "

The other spacer had fallen down behind the crankshaft damper and is now
firmly wedged in there. The damper will have to come off. A job for my good
Jag specialist. I’ve had too much fun already.

Dave,
Just turn the engine over in the opposite direction
with a socket on the alt pulley bolt.
You have to push on the belt to get enough friction,
but you cant hurt anything that way.

Seems like you might have damaged something though, as the
starter has a LOT of torque.

I guess I am used to doing it, but I look at something before I
take it apart, and watch the parts as they come off.
I fumble lots of parts, but always know when one falls
down into something(where you cant get it).

Another tip is that if something does not go together
EXACTLY right, and easy, something is wrong, and you have to
stop and figure it out.
Every bolt that comes out should go back in…no left over parts,
or parts short.
No extra force should ever be used.
The water pump bolts for example are different lengths
I think…you have to be sure to get them in the proper
positions, and you can tell by how far they stick out
when the threads first touch.

Good luck,
Brett
