An owner of a 90 XJ-40 has reported that his model has no “Atmospheric
Catchment Tank,” the overflow tank to which a hose runs from the expansion
tank filler neck, hidden on my 89 model behind the “Inner Wheel Arch
Finisher” (Left Front wheelwell). Can Brett, Dave, John, etc. please confirm
whether or not the 90 has such a tank. I can’t imagine how coolant level
could be maintained (due to normal expansion) if such a tank were NOT
included in the system.
Thanks,
George Balthrop
Is he talking about two tanks? There is an expansion reservoir - black
plastic, driver’s side of the engine compartment - in plain view. This is
connected to the radiator. I don’t know what an “Atmospheric Catchment
Tank” is. It sounds like he looking for another tank which is connected to
the expansion reservoir.

George,
That is correct, there is no catch tank.
There is a big expansion tank that is supposed to
be HALF full of coolant, and it has a pressure cap on top.
This keeps the radiator and system full, but allows room
for expansion/contraction of the coolant, and
maintains the pressure.
Seems to give no trouble as long as you only fill it
to the bottom of the white plastic insert under the cap.

There is an Atmospheric Recovery Bottle situated in the LH wing which
is connected to the header tank Part No. CAC6840.
This is similar to the Atmospheric Catchment Tank which is also fitted
in the LH wing of the XJ-S and serves the same purpose.

It is quite possible that you do not have a recovery tank. The changeover
for the recovery tank was at 1990MY. The recovery tank being fitted
up to VIN 594575 during which the original header tank was fitted.
The header was changed at VIN 594576 and the recovery tank dispensed
with. The header tank was changed once more with the 91MY at VIN 629286
but again the recovery tank did not make a comeback.

Steve,
I took a look today after washing the car and checking things out. There
is
no other tank. Maybe some cars have 'em and some don’t.
