[modern] Door handle, heater fan switch knob

Hello, Al and Butch, and the group,

  1. Door Handle Following up on my recent posting, the left rear ('88 XJ6)
external door handle is broken, NOT on the pivot pillar that pivots on the
rod, but on the handle, and viewable from the exterior.

While I have removed the exterior handle and can see that a new piece could
be fabricated if the break had been further up, it seems challenging to fit
a brace for this kind of break. In the archives, a few folks have
explained the bracing technique, but it seems to apply to when the handle
is broken further up.

Is there a kit available, or a replacement handle from, say
supercatjaguarspares or another firm? If a replacement jobber handle were
easily available, that would be superior to fabricating.

  1. Main fan switch

As I explained, the heater system is now dead. Since the fuses appear OK (I
will give a continuity check), the concept of squirting WD40 on the climate
micro switch as a magic fix, as some have suggested in the archives, is
appealing.

My questions are:

i) realistically, will spraying WD40 help or should one just replace the
so-called microswitch and be done with it as a first check?

ii) Also, can you just remove the knob of the fan control switch on its own
(we tried but didn’t want to break it) in order to spray WD40 in there, or
do you need to remove the entire heater control assembly in order to do
anything at all?

iii) Is there a way to tell what is currently wrong, including for example,
whether the fan blower(s) servo is working, without dismantling a large
proportion of the dashboard?

Thanks so much,

Steve,
WD40 INSIDE the micro switch fixed my problem for 4 years now.
The switch is inside the climate control panel, you have to
remove it from the dash and remove the back to get at it.
The knobs just pull off, and you can get at nuts holding
the front panel on to change leds, but the switch is on the back
of the circuit board driven by a cam on the fan speed control.

Its your problem if the indicator lights don’t light
(drops, air, auto/manual) when you have the problem.

If the lights come on but the blowers don’t work on any speed,
it could be the coolant temp sensor on the pipes
feeding the heater core (inside the dash).
If this is the problem, the system will work on defrost.

If the panel lights light up when buttons are pushed, but the fans don’t
work, even in defrost, its likely both blowers have a problem
with brushes/relays.
