[modern] Door locks

Hi everyone I am new to the list and a new owner of an 1989 XJ40 which comes
with most of the traditional problems…

In particular, only the driver’s exterior door handle works though all the
interior ones do.

When I lock the car with the key the left rear relay chatters but I hear
nothing from the other doors. Is this a’classic" problem and is it just the
relay?

Any advice on how to troubleshoot it would be appreciated.

regards,

Subject: RE: [modern] Early XJ40 brake pads

Bob, the brake dust shields (kleen wheels) don’t really cause brake heating
problems under normal conditions on an XJ40. However, you CAN get cleaner
pads. Used to be brand called “Repco” that offered “dustless pads” that
were much cleaner than the original equipment pads and still worked very
well. These are made in Australia now, and go under the names Axxis and PBR.
Don’t go for the Axxis Metal Masters, they are for hard use like racing, and
won’t give much grip when cold. The PBR semi-metallic or organic pads are
great, and give off very little dust. I have a set of PBRs on my car, they
work great. Widely available at import parts store, just call around.

Is there such a thing as dust-free (or nearly so) brake pads for
a 1988 XJ6?
I’ve just recently gotten my car, and after cleaning about twelve years’
accumulation of brake dust from the inside of the wheels, I’m
resisting the
urge to put the brake shields back on (a friend calls these “brake
heaters”).

A much better solution, at least to me, is to find pads that don’t blacken
the wheels in two or three days. Any help appreciated.

Well, we did put in the 5 door lock actuators. They now work. The units from
Maplin and Alleletronics were not as roubust as the factory ones but then
the difference between $220.00 and $5.00 for each one…Well, I’ll take my
chances. The biggest problem with the 1992 XJ40 is that the plastic is
getting old and so some glue was needed to hold the little square behind the
door inside handle. Thanks everyone for all your help and advise…New
problem. Why does the Transmission "limp home " light come on
intermittently? I have already sealed the cable behind the battery. Turn the
car off and its fixed…go figure Juan…o

Juan,
Glad to see you managed to get a working system at the least possible
cost.
As a matter of interest, did you dismantle any of the old/original
actuators to try and determine what component failed ?
Are the original units gearmotor or solenoid driven devices ?
I seem to recall a post from Brett G., which would indicate gearmotors with
limit switches.
I think that it is reasonably rare for all door locks to fail. It would be
interesting to know what the failure cause/mode was.

As my car doesn’t have an electronically controlled transmission, I can’t
advise on that part of your post.

By the way, as you haven’t posted anything recently, you may not be aware
that there is now a new set of listings. The one on the header for this
post is specific to the XJ40 model. The Modern list is to be closed in the
near future.

Kind Regards,

John Tarrant.

P.S. A direct e-mail copy to your address failed to transmit successfully !

Juan,
The trans alarm on the dash is triggered mostly by electrical
problems.

Dirty connections at the electrical connector
on the side of the trans, dirty or bad gear position switch
(indicates wrong/no gear), low battery voltage, bad
relays on newer cars that have the un sealed relays
under the hood (for trans ecu and other things),
or low fluid level (triggers low pressure switch in trans)
and the throttle position sensor and its connections.

Its been reported that you can get the alarm if you over
fill the trans as the fluid foams up.

Could be loose, wet or oxidized connection. If it comes and goes that is where
you will find the problem
