[modern] Engine Temp 1992 XJ40 4ltr

Hello to the Modern list.

I think I might have a problem that maybe some list members might have
the answer to.
My 1992 XJ40 4ltr (ex Japan) seems, according to the water temp gauge is
not getting hot enough.
The gauge works and that means presumably that the sender is ok.
I first noticed that the temp gauge would get up to the mid position if
the engine was pulling hard but when just cruising along at 60mph the
gauge would fall back to just in the green, and climb up again on hard
driving. This started happening on a long trip earlier this winter.
Now that we are in the dead of winter, with the outside temp being minus
5 degrees. I have noticed that after start up and say 2 miles the gauge
will come up to just the top of the green and then fall back very
quickly to almost the stop and then after perhaps 10 miles gradually
climb back to the top of the green.
I would have thought that even in cold weather the temp should be on the
normal positionin the center of the gauge. Could this also account for
why the cabin heater is not very hot.
Even in the height of summer last year the gauge never got past normal.
Is this all a symptom of a faulty thermostat? Any help would be
appreciated.

Mike,
These are all symptoms of a bad thermostat, they’re cheap and easy to
replace, just make sure you get the correct temperature…it’s REALLY
bad to run a Jaguar with a bad thermo…

Sure sounds like a thermostat if the gauge is working. Its a cheap and easy
part to replace, so no harm and little effort to try it and see. Might also
check the heater control valve as well, if its blocked or faulty you wont
get any heat.

Mike, either a stuck open thermostat, or someone removed it completely.
